Netanyahu Confirms Hamas Leader Mohammed Sinwar Killed in Israeli Airstrike

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu confirmed on Wednesday that Mohammed Sinwar, a senior Hamas leader in Gaza and brother of the late Yahya Sinwar, was killed in an Israeli airstrike earlier this month.

Addressing the Knesset, Netanyahu stated that Israel was at a “dramatic turning point” in its military campaign against Hamas, and that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) had “eliminated Mohammed Sinwar.” The Prime Minister emphasized that recent operations were aimed at dismantling Hamas’ governing and military infrastructure in the Gaza Strip.

The announcement marked the first official confirmation of Sinwar’s death, following a joint IDF and Shin Bet strike on May 13 that targeted a Hamas command bunker beneath the Gaza European Hospital in Khan Younis. According to Gaza health authorities, 26 people were killed in the airstrike. However, until now, there had been no independent or Hamas confirmation regarding Sinwar’s fate.

Mohammed Sinwar, 49, assumed a prominent leadership role within Hamas in October 2024, following the death of his brother Yahya Sinwar. He oversaw the organization’s military and political operations in Gaza, including command over its armed wing, the Izz al-Din al-Qassam Brigades.

Netanyahu also provided an update on the status of Israeli hostages believed to be held by Hamas in Gaza. According to Israeli intelligence, 20 hostages are currently alive, while 38 are presumed dead.

In a related development, Hamas issued a statement on Wednesday claiming it had reached a general framework agreement for a ceasefire with U.S. Special Envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff. The proposed deal includes the release of 10 Israeli hostages and the return of several bodies in exchange for an agreed-upon number of Palestinian prisoners, under the guarantee of international mediators.

Hamas added that it is awaiting a final response to the framework and is making “significant efforts to halt the brutal war on the Gaza Strip.”

The situation remains fluid, with international actors closely monitoring ongoing developments in ceasefire negotiations and military operations.

Schengen Visa Applications Soar Past 11.7 Million in 2024

Schengen visa applications witnessed a significant increase in 2024, reaching over 11.7 million—representing a 13.4% year-on-year growth, according to newly released data from SchengenVisaInfo. This surge underscores resilient international travel demand, even amid ongoing geopolitical tensions and enhanced border control measures in parts of Europe.

China continued to lead as the top source country for Schengen visa applicants, registering a dramatic 59.2% rise from the previous year. Chinese nationals filed approximately 1.7 million applications in 2024, up from 1.1 million in 2023. France remained the most popular destination among Chinese travellers, receiving 458,018 applications—an increase of nearly 69% from the prior year.

Turkey followed with 1.173 million applications, marking an 11.1% increase. Greek consulates emerged as the top recipient, processing over 296,000 Turkish applications. India ranked third, with 1.108 million applications—a 14.6% annual increase. Switzerland received the highest number of Indian applications, exceeding 217,000.

Morocco and Russia each recorded over 600,000 applications. While Moroccan submissions rose slightly by 2.6%, applications to France from Moroccan nationals declined by 8.9%. Russian applications saw a modest 2.5% increase, with Italy being the most sought-after destination, handling more than 161,000 visa requests.

Other notable contributors included Algeria, Saudi Arabia, and the United Kingdom. Algerian applications surged by 14.8% to 544,634, with France receiving 352,295 of those—an increase of 26.3% from 2023. Saudi Arabian applicants submitted 505,455 applications, with over a third choosing France as their primary destination. From the UK, foreign residents filed 470,569 applications, a 5.74% increase from the previous year, with France again taking the lead at 132,469 applications.

Thailand was the only top-10 country to report a decline, with applications dipping by 1.9%. However, Germany surpassed Switzerland as the preferred destination, receiving close to 40,000 Thai applications. The UAE also saw growth, with applications rising to 260,229—up from 233,932 in 2023. Germany was the most popular choice, attracting 12.6% of all UAE-based requests.

Collectively, the top 10 countries accounted for 62.4% of all Schengen visa applications in 2024, up from 58.7% in 2023. This trend highlights a growing concentration of demand among key international markets, reaffirming Europe’s continued appeal as a global travel destination.

A growing number of international students in the United States—particularly those participating in the Optional Practical Training (OPT) program—are receiving strict notices from U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) over compliance issues related to employer information in the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS).

The warnings are primarily triggered by missing, outdated, or incorrect employer details in SEVIS, which is used by the Department of Homeland Security to track the employment status of F-1 visa holders. Under OPT regulations, international students are allowed a maximum of 90 days of unemployment during the initial 12-month OPT period. Students who receive a STEM-OPT extension are granted an additional 60 days, totaling 150 days.

Students identified as non-compliant receive letters from ICE giving them just 15 days to rectify their SEVIS records. Failure to respond within this period could lead to the termination of their SEVIS records and the initiation of deportation proceedings.

One such letter reviewed states: “Because there is no employer information in your SEVIS record, you are accumulating unemployment days… failure to take corrective action may result in immigration proceedings.”

Indian students are among the most impacted. During the 2022–2023 academic year, approximately 69,000 of the 270,000 Indian students in the U.S. were participating in OPT programs.

Immigration attorneys are strongly advising international students to remain vigilant and report any changes in employment—whether it be a new job, loss of employment, or changes in employer details—within the required 10-day window to maintain legal status and avoid severe immigration consequences.

కర్ణాటక రాష్ట్రంలో మాతృభాషకు ఉన్న గౌరవం ప్రత్యేకంగా చెప్పక్కర్లేదు. కన్నడ భాషను అపహాస్యం చేయడమో, లేక ఉద్దేశపూర్వకంగా మరొక భాషను ప్రాధాన్యంలో ఉంచడమో జరిగినా, అక్కడి ప్రజలు వెంటనే స్పందిస్తారు. ఇటీవలి కాలంలో బెంగళూరు, గుల్బర్గా, బెళగావి వంటి నగరాల్లో స్థానికేతరులపై భాషా ఉద్వేగాలు చెలరేగిన సందర్భాలు కొన్ని సోషల్ మీడియా వేదికగా దర్శనమిస్తున్నాయి. అయితే అదే సమయంలో, హిందీ, ఇంగ్లీష్ మాధ్యమాల ప్రభావం పెరుగుతోన్న ఈ యుగంలో స్థానిక భాషలకు తగిన గుర్తింపు ఇవ్వడం అవసరమని, అటువంటి స్పందనలు ఓరకంగా సహజమేనేమో అనే వాదనలు వినిపిస్తున్నాయి.
