Anthropic Reopens Talks with US Pentagon on AI Deal

Anthropic has been in the spotlight for initially refusing an AI deal with the US Defence Department over concerns regarding AI reliability, mass surveillance, and autonomous weapons. Now, CEO Dario Amodei is reportedly re-engaging with the Pentagon, potentially to avoid exclusion from the military’s supply chain. According to a report by the Financial Times, the company is in discussions with Emil Michael, the under-secretary of defence for research and engineering, on a deal that would define how the US military can use Anthropic’s AI models.
If an agreement is finalized, the Pentagon could continue using Anthropic’s AI tools, and the company would likely avoid receiving the damaging “supply chain risk” designation that has been looming. Last week, Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth warned that Anthropic could be labeled as a supply chain risk, though the designation has not yet been made official.
Anthropic had previously drawn a firm line regarding the use of its AI tools by the military, refusing to remove two critical safeguards from its Pentagon contract: a ban on using its models for mass domestic surveillance and a restriction against deploying fully autonomous weapons systems. In a blog post, Amodei emphasized that AI is not yet reliable enough to operate without human oversight. Despite this stance, the company is now reportedly back in negotiations with the Pentagon, though no official deal has been confirmed yet.
While Anthropic’s cautious approach with the US military could risk its status in government supply chains, its Claude AI chatbot has gained significant popularity among users. In contrast, OpenAI faced heavy backlash for striking a deal with the Pentagon, triggering a social media “Cancel ChatGPT” movement and a reported 295% surge in app uninstalls last week.
UAE Waives Fines Amid Airspace Closures; Oman Visa Update for Indians

The United Arab Emirates has announced a waiver of overstay fines for tourists and residents who were unable to leave the country due to ongoing airspace closures and flight suspensions across the region. The decision was confirmed by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security following travel disruptions triggered by escalating regional tensions.
According to authorities, the exemption applies to individuals whose travel plans were affected by suspended or rescheduled flights under what officials described as “exceptional regional circumstances.” The waiver covers fines incurred from February 28, 2026 onwards.
Those eligible for the exemption include visitors on tourist or visit visas, residents whose residency permits were cancelled in preparation for departure, and individuals holding valid exit permits who could not leave as scheduled.
To support affected travellers, specialised teams have been deployed at UAE airports and Customer Happiness Centres. These teams are operating under emergency protocols to assist passengers and coordinate closely with relevant authorities to ensure smooth processing. Travellers have been advised to stay updated through official communication channels as the situation evolves.
Although regular flights operated by UAE carriers remain suspended until at least March 7, 2026, special repatriation flights have been arranged in coordination with the General Civil Aviation Authority. In addition, air corridors with GCC countries have been reopened, allowing up to 48 flights per hour as air traffic gradually resumes.
Meanwhile, neighbouring Oman has clarified visa requirements for Indian nationals planning onward travel.
Indian passport holders intending to visit Oman must apply for an e-Visa in advance through authorised travel agents via the Royal Oman Police website. However, Indian citizens holding valid visas or residence permits from countries such as the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, Japan, or Schengen nations may be eligible for a visa on arrival for up to 14 days, provided they carry a return ticket, confirmed hotel booking, and valid health insurance.
Indian nationals residing in GCC countries — including Bahrain, Kuwait, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the UAE — with valid resident cards are also eligible for a visa on arrival in Oman. However, students holding GCC resident cards must secure a visit visa prior to travel. In all cases, passports must be valid for at least six months at the time of visa application or entry.
These updated travel measures and visa clarifications are particularly important for Indian nationals navigating travel within the GCC region as flight operations gradually stabilise.
Canada Launches $100 Million Scholarships for Indian Students

In a major step to encourage more Indian students to pursue higher education in Canada, the country has announced a $100 million scholarship initiative aimed at expanding academic opportunities and strengthening educational ties between the two nations. The programme forms part of a broader effort to deepen Canada–India academic partnerships, enhance research collaboration, and improve student mobility through new funding pathways.
A key highlight of the initiative is the provision of up to 200 fully funded scholarships for Indian students. These scholarships will be administered through the University of Toronto and will be available to students admitted to participating Canadian institutions. The funding will support students at multiple academic levels, including undergraduate, master’s, doctoral, and postdoctoral programmes. In many cases, the scholarships are expected to cover tuition fees, living expenses, and research-related costs, helping reduce the financial burden associated with studying abroad. Officials have stated that the goal is not only to attract talented students and researchers but also to build long-term academic cooperation between institutions in both countries.
Another important aspect of the programme is the establishment of three hybrid study centres in India. These centres will allow students to begin their Canadian degree programmes in India before completing them in Canada, making international education more accessible and affordable. The proposed academic hubs are expected to focus on high-growth fields such as artificial intelligence, technology, innovation, and advanced research. One of the centres is likely to be developed by Dalhousie University in collaboration with Indian institutions, while the remaining hubs will involve partnerships with other leading Canadian universities.
As part of the wider initiative, 13 new agreements have been signed between universities in Canada and India to expand cooperation in areas such as student exchange programmes, joint degrees, collaborative research projects, and short-term training courses. These partnerships are expected to focus on priority sectors including artificial intelligence, clean energy, agriculture, health sciences, and public policy.
The announcement comes at a time when international student policies are evolving globally. In 2024, Canada introduced a temporary cap on international student permits, reducing approvals by around 35 percent to ease pressure on housing, healthcare, and other public services. Since Indian students make up the largest group of international students in Canada, the policy had a noticeable impact, with reports indicating a significant drop in study permit approvals in 2025. At the same time, changing visa policies and rising costs in other countries have also influenced student decisions. Through this new scholarship initiative, Canada is signalling its continued commitment to strengthening education ties with India while creating structured and sustainable pathways for aspiring students.
Varun Tej at a Crossroads After Hat-Trick Flops

Among Telugu cinema’s mid-range heroes, Nani stands out as the only actor who has consistently maintained a steady run at the box office. While several others are facing a rough patch, the situation seems particularly challenging for Varun Tej, who is currently grappling with a hat-trick of flops.
What raises further concern is that his last two releases reportedly failed to cross even the ₹10 crore mark each, struggling to generate respectable openings. With his market value under pressure, Varun Tej is now treading cautiously and reassessing his upcoming choices.
He has already signed Korean Kanakaraju, directed by Merlapaka Gandhi and backed by UV Creations. The recently unveiled video glimpse has garnered a positive response, offering a ray of hope for the actor’s comeback.
Interestingly, even before the film hits screens, Varun Tej is said to be in discussions for fresh projects. Industry buzz suggests that director Maruthi has approached him with a new commercial entertainer. After the underwhelming performance of The Raja Saab, starring Prabhas, Maruthi is reportedly keen to return to his forte — light-hearted festive entertainers.
He has even registered the title Happy Pongal and is planning the film in the vein of celebratory entertainers like F2: Fun and Frustration, hoping to tap into the holiday season advantage.
However, Varun Tej is still weighing his options and has not officially signed the project. With his next few decisions likely to shape his career trajectory, the coming months will be crucial for the young actor.

Trump Says US in Strong Position as Military Campaign Against Iran Escalates
US President Donald Trump has stated that the United States is in a commanding position in its military campaign against Iran, with senior Iranian leaders increasingly being targeted. His remarks come as the conflict enters its fifth consecutive day, signaling an escalation in operations and a determined approach from Washington. Trump confirmed that the joint US-Israeli air campaign would continue, asserting, “We will continue forward,” indicating the operation is far from over. US officials claim that the strikes have already significantly weakened Iran’s military capabilities, including missile and naval assets.
Summing up the military’s performance, Trump said, “We’re doing well on the war front, to put it mildly. Somebody said on a scale of 10, where would you rate it? I said about a 15.” He also highlighted the removal of key figures in Tehran’s hierarchy, emphasizing the seriousness of the current US strategy. “We’re in a very strong position now, and their leadership is just rapidly going. Everybody that seems to want to be a leader, they end up dead,” Trump said.
Reports have emerged of fresh explosions across the Middle East, with US forces continuing coordinated operations alongside Israel. A major development was the sinking of an Iranian warship by a US submarine off the coast of Sri Lanka, marking an escalation in naval confrontations.
The Pentagon has outlined that the campaign’s primary objective is to cripple Iran’s missile capabilities and degrade its military infrastructure. “Their arsenal of ballistic missiles is being wiped out rapidly,” Trump said, underscoring the swift progress of the operation. Officials have pointed to the systematic targeting of Tehran’s missile systems as a core priority.
Meanwhile, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt noted that Trump is considering the US role in Iran post-campaign, though no detailed plans have been shared. The President also reiterated concerns about Iran’s nuclear ambitions, stating, “When crazy people have nuclear weapons, bad things happen,” and justified the offensive as necessary to prevent Tehran from threatening the United States and its allies.
Despite Trump’s confident tone, the administration has yet to present a comprehensive post-conflict strategy for Iran.
