Euro 2016 football championship potential target of terror attacks in France, warns US
The United States Department of State warned its citizens planning a visit to European nations this summer that there might be a threat of terror attacks across Europe, particularly public places including the venue of the 2016 UEFA European football championship. The department, however, does not have specific information on the threat. The Euro 2016 football tournament is scheduled from June 10 to July 10. “The Euro Cup stadiums, fan zones, and unaffiliated entertainment venues broadcasting the tournaments in France and across Europe” could be potential targets for terror attacks, the state department said in an alert.
“The large number of tourists visiting Europe in the summer months will present greater targets for terrorists planning attacks in public locations, especially at large events,” the travel alert read, adding that the warning has been issued till August 31.The U.S. Department of State has warned the American tourists in Europe to be extra vigilant at tourist sites, restaurants, commercial centres and while using mass transportation.Meanwhile, France has tightened security for the soccer championship and the Tour de France cycling race scheduled to be held between July 2 and July 24. Poland is organising the Catholic Church’s World Youth Day event in Kraków between July 26 and July 31 and close to 2.5 million people are likely to attend the event.
This is the second alert the U.S. has issued for Europe this year. The first alert was issued on March 22 after attacks on Brussels airport and Maalbeek metro station and it is scheduled to expire in June, Reuters reported. At least 32 people were killed in the attack.”We took the opportunity, because it’s the beginning of summer, to make our concerns known. I’m not aware of any specific, credible, terrorist event around these events or in any particular place in Europe. This was issued … based on an accumulation of information,” Reuters quoted State Department spokesperson John Kirby as saying.Commenting on the alert issued by the U.S., Italy’s anti-terrorism police unit’s chief Lamberto Giannini said he has “no specific warnings or particular evidence” about potential terror threats, but there was a need for “maximum attention” across Europe.

Apple’s next flagships, the iPhone 7 and iPhone 7 Plus aren’t expected to be available until September 2016, but the internet is already awash with its purported specifications and designs. Among many rumours, another rumour suggests that Apple will drop its 16GB storage option in favour of a 32 GB option, aimed to provide sufficient capacity.
Kevin Wang, an IHS technology analyst who claims links in Apple’s supply chain, posted on his weibo account, the new Phone, expected to be launched in September, would come with 32 GB as its minimum storage.Apple has designed its models with a 16GB of storage capacity since 2011’s 4s, but as apps and photos takes more space on the device, many people have criticised that the 16GB storage capacity is not enough.Apple has also been rumoured to be getting four speakers, dual camera and is believed to eliminate the headphone jack.

Microsoft sells patents to Xiaomi, builds ‘long-term partnership
Software maker Microsoft is selling about 1,500 of its patents to Chinese device maker Xiaomi, a rare departure for the U.S. company and part of what the two companies say is the start of a long-term partnership. The deal, announced on Wednesday, also includes a patent cross-licensing arrangement and a commitment by Xiaomi to install copies of Microsoft software, including Office and Skype, on its phones and tablets. Both companies declined to discuss financial terms of the deal.
“This is a very big collaboration agreement between the two companies,” Wang Xiang, senior vice president at Xiaomi, said by telephone ahead of the deal.Analysts said Xiaomi’s ambitions to be a major player outside China were hampered by weak patent protection and a fear of a prolonged legal battle.”This deal might just give them enough of a patent trove to move to Western markets,” said Sameer Singh, a UK-based analyst. “Their position in China has been under constant attack from even lower-end Android vendors, so moving overseas is now a necessity.”
Shipments of Xiaomi phones fell 9 percent year-on-year in China in the first quarter, according to Strategy Analytics, and its market share dipped to 12 percent from 13 percent, squeezed not only by Huawei and Samsung Electronics but also smaller contenders including Oppo and Vivo.Wang said the acquisition of Microsoft patents, which included voice communications, multimedia and cloud computing, on top of some 3,700 patents the Chinese company filed last year, were “an important step forwards to support our expansion internationally.”
Xiaomi launched its first U.S. device earlier this month, a TV set-top box it developed in cooperation with Alphabet Inc’s Google, which owns the Android operating system it and most Xiaomi devices run on. Xiaomi has also launched a tablet which runs a version of Microsoft’s Windows operating system.Jonathan Tinter, corporate vice president at Microsoft, said the company was keen to tap into Xiaomi’s young, affluent and educated users by having its products pre-installed on their devices. He declined to go into detail about the patent deals, but said the overall deal was something “we do only with a few strategic partners.”
Microsoft has cut licensing deals with many Android device makers over the years, but has had less luck with Chinese manufacturers.Florian Mueller, a patents expert who consulted for Microsoft in the past, said it was rare for Microsoft to actually sell its patents, adding “it’s possible Microsoft found it easier to impose its Android patent tax on Xiaomi as part of a broader deal that also involved a transfer of patents.”

A Really Strange Decision
Nirmala Seetharaman once again stated categorically that Apple will not be allowed to sell second hand refurbished phones in India. The Department of Electronics and Information Technology has told the environment ministry and the Director General of Foreign Trade that it does not support the import of second-hand consumer products because it contributes to electronic waste being dumped in India, officials said and now Nirmala Seetharaman has upheld the same stance. This is really a strange argument.
How can second hand phones refurbished contribute to e-waste and first hand phones not do so? It is everyone’s dream to own an iphone first hand or second hand and the ultimate choice should be left to the consumer. The government will anyway be getting revenue in the form of taxation and Apple has also declared that it would be following the same quality control procedures for all range of its phones, first hand or second hand.
If Apple sells second hand phones, then the other manufactures will be badly hit and this could be the actual reason. But then, they should come out with something innovative to stay in the reckoning for this is a free market. Mentioning reasons such as e-waste is just a farce.
