Metro Rail project crawls at snail’s pace

Visakhapatnam: The Vizag Metro Rail project, which was proposed even before the state bifurcation amid much fanfare, has failed to make any visible progress. The detailed project report (DPR) approved by the state government for the Vizag Metro project is to yet be ratified by the Union government. Fast tracking the Metro works in Vijayawada, the state government formed Amaravati Metro Rail Corporation months ago and already kick-started the tender process. But, no Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) has been established to entrust the responsibilities of planning and execution of Vizag Metro works.

Speaking to DC, a GVMC official, who has been coordinating with the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC), said, “The state Cabinet has recently approved the Vizag Metro DPR and it was forwarded for the scrutiny of the Union Government. It would take another 1-2 months before getting the administrative nod.” When asked how the land acquisition process could impact the pace of works, the GVMC official explained, “Other than the stretch of 12 km of two corridors, there would be not much effect as there were wide medians on the NH, which covers 30 km of the project.”

GVMC commissioner chief Pravin Kumar explained that they are striving to complete the works of some stations of Vizag Metro project in 2016 itself. After forming the special purpose vehicle, the government has to go ahead with land acquisition and call for tenders of the construction works. The project works, which will be started in the 2016, are expected to be completed by 2020.

Son rises in the sunrise state

Vijayawada: Exactly three months ago, the ruling Telugu Desam saw a change in its leadership as it leaped into the national politics as a national party. Much to the surprise of the party senior cadre, Nara Lokesh, son of the party chief Mr N. Chandrababu Naidu was made the general secretary of the central committee and member of ex-officio politburo.

All from the stage of a coordinator of party workers welfare fund where he worked as a common party activist, Mr Lokesh was lifted to one of the top positions and this has boosted the spirit of young politicians of the party.

Mr Lokesh has the unique position of being the only leader to be in both ex officio politburo and the central committee after Mr Naidu. “Mr Lokesh deserves the posts given to him. He will be the next leader of the party. Though he is son of the party chief, since 10 years he has been working hard and took up many programmes that helped the party.

In the last 34 years, the TD never saw any unique programme like membership drive which got a record number of members to the party,” justifies party national spokesperson and Vijayawada Central MLA Mr B. Umamaheswara Rao. “He also brought many reforms in the party. As an educated, straight forward and hardworking leader, Lokesh is a hope to the youngsters in the party,” Mr Rao added.

Abode Of The Immortal Or Road To Uncertainty?

Share

amaravathi_farmers1451649922

‘Amaravathi’ means ‘Abode of the immortal’. But it could well turn out to be the road to an uncertain future and doom for the farmers residing in the area. The CM says that the whole world is looking at Amaravathi and it is the moment for everyone including farmers to make sacrifices for the new capital.

Well, sacrifices are quite easy when it is the other person who has to make them. So why are the farmers so opposed to the land pooling policy of the government? And what is the social angle to the resentment among the farmers in the area? Let us look at the social angle first. The farmers who have volunteered for the land pooling in the area are Kammas and those who or opposed to it belong to the Kapu and Reddy communities.

Traditionally, these social groups have been rivals and the Kapu and Reddy farmers feel that it is a deliberate ploy to weaken them. And coming to the land pooling policy of the government, here is what it offers farmers. Under this policy, farmers in the designated capital region, around 20 kilometers from Vijayawada and Guntur, who willingly donate their lands to the state government for construction of the capital, would get in return, roughly one quarter of the original size of their land holdings as developed plots, part residential and part commercial.

For ten years after giving up their land for pooling, farmers would be entitled to an annuity of Rs 30,000 per acre for dry land and Rs 50,000 per acre for ‘jareebu’ or fertile land. Apart from this, skill development training would be provided by the government to teach these farmers new vocations, since the pooled land would not be allowed to be cultivated again. How can 50 and 60 year old farmers learn new skills at this stage in their life and make themselves eligible for employment? But that is not the major cause of resentment.

In a village like Undavalli, in the new capital region for example, an acre of land is now worth Rs 8 crore according to the going rate. And a farmer makes nearly Rs 50,000 to Rs 1 lakh per acre per month here. If a farmer owns 5 acres, he makes anything around Rs 2.5 lakh to Rs 5 lakh per month. If he agrees to land pooling, he cannot cultivate his lands anymore and he would get Rs 1.5 lakh to Rs 2.5 lakh per anum. Why would they agree to land pooling then?

If Naidu invokes the ‘Land Acquisition Act’, he would have to pay four times the market value and also get approval from 80% of the land owners. In the meanwhile, those who have already given their lands are sitting idle in their villages waiting for the Singaporeans to descend. If work doesn’t start soon and they don’t get their developed plots, Amaravathi will turn into a nightmare for them soon.

Feel Good…. That’s the first word that comes to mind when one watches the teaser of Mahesh Babu-starrer Brahmotsavam. The tinge of light blue in the ambiance and the diffused light while showing a pleasant-looking, casuals wearing Prince almost tell the story.

It is going to be a feel good family drama that director Srikanth Addala is so good at making. The name of the film may not have the touch of class like Seetamma Vaakitlo, but it definitely makes one feel pleasantly happy.

This is the second film in Srikanth Addala and Mahesh Babu’s combo. Mahesh seems to have understood that the audience no longer want the dishum dishum stuff. So, on offer from Brahmotsavam is a family entertainer with feel good touch.

Released on the New Year Day, the teaser has both soft pangs and hard bangs and of course, towering it all is the presence of unarguably the most handsome Telugu hunk – Mahesh Babu. The soft feel of the trailer would make you to ask for more. Kudos Srikanth Addala and bravo Mahesh Babu.

As we all know Nandamuri Balakrisha is straight forward person and doesn’t care of any controversy or other things. The actor busy promoting his 99th film Dictator arriving to theaters for Sankranthi said in an interview that no one has guts to shoot in public like him.

When the host asked, did your stuntman made your work tougher, Balakrishna replied saying, “I love doing stunts. In fact, I ask my fight masters for better stunts. I performed hard-hitting action sequences, without even using ropes so many times. Many assume that, the glass breaking scene with horse in Legend, was a computer generated graphic. Indeed, people have a mindset that, such scenes will be made in graphics. But, more than 25k people watched me perfoming the stunt.

I challenge that, no one in the industry has such guts to perform in public like me. My director Boyapati Sreenu requested to use graphics for the sequence, but I opposed him. Coming to Dictator, this movie will also have some high octane action sequences, especially that we shot in Bulgaria.” Balakrishna admitted that, the title Dictator justifies his character.

Balakrishna also wished his fans, well wishers and movie buffs happy new year and hoped his film Dictator will perform well at the box office.

Munich police warn of ‘imminent threat’ of attack

Police in Munich warned of a “serious, imminent threat” by Islamic State group suicide bombers wanting to commit an attack on New Year’s Eve and asked people to stay away from the city’s main train station and a second train station in the city’s Pasing neighbourhood.

Bavaria’s Interior Minister Joachim Herrmann told reporters at Munich’s police headquarters authorities had received information that the militant group Islamic State was behind the threat.

Munich police president Hubertus Andrae said German authorities had been tipped off by a foreign intelligence service that IS was planning attacks with five to seven suicide bombers, a German news agency eported. Andrae said so far there hadn’t been any arrests.

Police spokesman Werner Kraus told The Associated Press that “after evaluating the situation, we started evacuating the train stations and also asked partygoers to stay away from big crowds outside.” The warning came only hours before the city rang in the New Year.

Despite police warnings to stay away from big crowds, thousands of people were on the streets of Munich at midnight to welcome the New Year with fireworks. DPA reported massive delays in the city’s public transportation system after both train stations were quickly evacuated and trains were no longer stopped there. Cities across Europe have been on edge since a terror attack in Paris in November killed 130 people.

A few days after the Paris attack, a soccer stadium in Hannover in central Germany was evacuated after a terror threat against a friendly match between Germany and the Netherlands. The authorities never reported any findings of explosives or concrete attack plans.
