Kalavathi Movie Review – 2.75/5

Share

Sundar’s horror comedy Aranmanai was a huge hit in Tamilnadu and did fairly well in Telugu as Chandrakala. Now he comes up with a sequel to it. In Tamil it was titled Aranmanai 2 but in Telugu makers have gone for a new name, Kalavathi. Sundar tries to sell this off as a new film with new premise, but nothing has changed except for few actors and the packaging.

Story :

Murali (Siddharth) is shocked to hear that his father (Radharavi) met with an accident and comes to his ancestral home. Little did he know about the house being haunted by some evil spirit that also caused the freak accident to his father. Strange things continue to happen and his friend Ravi (Sundar) comes to rescue. They learn about the evil spirit that is creating problems in the house. The back story of that spirit and how Murali and Ravi overcomes it forms rest of the story.

Performances:

Siddharth is too good an actor to play such a stock character. He does his best to fit into this setup and succeeds to an extent. Sid gets to star in most of the songs but Sundar’s character dominates the show. He is just okay as an actor. Trisha sizzled in the beach song and later did a fine job with the ghost portrayal. Hansika is good. Poonam Bajwa adds a bit of extra glamour to the film. Suri and Kovai Sarala comedic love story is targeted at the masses.

Technicalities:

Sundar sticks with the template that is the fodder for many horror films. He knows his audience very well and doesn’t mind to go overboard to please them. This film looks like a nineties film in terms of taking and execution, but still works at times just because of the formula. Sundar managed to pull it off for the most part, but a bit of variety could have helped.

Music is pretty bad and cinematographer’s work is standard. Editing is alright. The film is stretched tad too much which doesn’t help it in anyway. Production values are good.

Thumbs Up:

  • Comedy scenes
  • Horror Element
  • Glamour

Thumbs Down:

  • Cliched story
  • Dated making style
  • VFX

Analysis:

A pregnant lady and her husband were killed under the name of honor and she sets out to take revenge. This is the basic plot of this film. Sundar sticks to the formula that has worked zillion times and firmly believed that it would work again. Well, it did, going by the response of the frontbenchers. There is a pathetic attempt at the comedy that is again an excuse of playing it to the galleries.

Suri and Kovai Sarala somehow managed to make this stupid comedy work with their antics and one-liners. Real fun that everybody can enjoy only comes in the pre climatic portions. Comedy works at times but the horror element is not effective due to predictable narration. How can anyone be scared when they could predict the outcome of every scene before hand?

Sundar is known for making commercial potboilers and he puts his experience to good use by signing up lot of frontline actors. His ploy nearly worked as the actors did save the movie from tripping. Kalavathi could have been a better film if it had better technical values and a proper script. It may still work because of Sundar’s ‘play it safe’ philosophy. Kalavathi also is the better film among this week’s releases, which is going to boost its box office prospects.

Verdict: Kalavathi is full-on Horror Masala.

Young Tiger NTR is known as one of the most reclusive stars in Tollywood. However, before and after the release of his Sankranthi hit Nannaku Prematho, NTR made a huge splash in the media when he gave a few pre and post release interviews.

However, the Young Tiger has once again disappeared from the public scene. Prior to Nannaku Prematho promotions, NTR made a couple of public appearances during Kumari 21F teaser and film releases and his brother Kalyanram’s Sher audio launch, apart from his Temper audio release event last year.

The situation is quite different with other stars who actively appear in public events occasionally. Even the two other most reclusive stars in Tollywood, Pawan Kalyan and Mahesh Babu, also make their presence felt through political meetings and award functions etc.

And other younger generation stars like Ram Charan and Allu Arjun etc are also seen regularly in various events, much to the joy of their fans. With NTR again going back to his reclusive self, disappointed fans are wondering if he will resurface any soon, unless a miracle happens before the audio launch of his next film Janatha Garage. Till then, it’s Bye Bye NTR.

Recently, Vangaveeti Radha, son of the firebrand politician from Vijayawada late Vangaveeti Ranga, warned filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma against showing his father in a bad light in his ambitious biopic, Vangaveeti.

Radha warned RGV of dire consequences if he distorts facts and takes the opposition’s side. A week later, RGV finally gave a fitting counter warning in his usual style. Just a while ago, RGV openly addressed his tweets to Radha saying Radha was a kid at the time of his father’s death whereas he closely moved with Ranga in those days.

RGV goes on to call Radha a ‘pillodu’ and said that his father Ranga predicted long back that Radha will like a pillodu when he grows up. RGV said he is shocked to see Radha still behaving like a kid by believing people’s words. RGV also suggested Radha to know about the flashback of his father and uncle before giving him warnings.

Now, yet another Telugu badminton champ PV Sindhu aspires to turn an actress. In her recent interview after her victory in the Malaysia Masters, the 20-year-old said that she would love to act in her biopic.

“I would love to act in a film if it is based on my life. But then it all depends on who is making it and how much time it would require for me shoot. If everything falls into place, why not,” said the champ who has just been honored with a Padma Shri by the Indian government.

Since a biopic on yet another Hyderabadi badminton star Saina Nehwal is in the making, one can surely expect filmmakers to showcase Sindhu’s life story on celluloid.

Hattrick Hero’s ‘Sitralu’ In Kashtaalu

Share

raj-tarun-should-not-prefer-multi-starrers_b_3011150829

These are certainly not the days for fluke hits and that too for a young wave like Raj Tharun. We have seen him enjoying hattrick hits with Uyyala Jampala, Cinema Choopista maava and Kumari 21F. Now with his Seethamma Andalu Ramayya Sitralu getting mixed and below average talk, lets see what this young hero missed.

There were heroes who kickstarted their careers with back to back hits from their debuts like Tarun, Uday Kiran, Nithin, Ram and the list goes on. Scoring a good hit gave them the boost up to more energy and kick, but wrong choice of scripts later pulled them to flop zone.

Raj Tarun chose different stories each time till now, even though almost all his characters look alike its the uniqueness in scripts that helped him. But his latest offering Seethamma Andalu Ramayya Sitralu story is as old as mountains and his choice for this story itself seems to be a blunder.

Aimless youth getting rejected by his childhood love and his struggle to get her is a story that was beaten to pulp long back. Weaving some satires and fun with hero’s friends does not become the saviors.

The break-even may be a dream for this film as the fellow release Kalavathi got some brownies already. Craze for Raj Tarun among youth may be a chance to save this film upto some extent. There is no much time to recover, as there is huge line up for next few weekends.
