Pawan Kalyan Sensed Johnny’s Fate Before Release

Before fully immersing himself in Andhra Pradesh politics, Pawan Kalyan was a celebrated cinema star with an immense following. In a recent interaction with the Telugu media during the promotional campaign for Thandel, senior producer Allu Aravind shared an interesting anecdote about one of Pawan Kalyan’s earlier films, Johnny—a project that ultimately didn’t fare well at the box office.

Johnny was highly anticipated at the time, especially since it marked Pawan Kalyan’s directorial debut and featured a blockbuster music album that built up the excitement. The film’s high expectations were met with disappointment when it failed to connect with audiences and turned out to be one of the biggest box office flops of that year.

What many might not know is that Allu Aravind revealed that Pawan Kalyan had sensed the film’s fate early on, even while the shooting was still underway. Kalyan himself had doubts about the movie’s success, realizing that its theme and setup were likely too unconventional for the Telugu audience. Despite his reservations, Kalyan couldn’t back out at that stage due to the ongoing production and the already complicated trade and sales arrangements.

Despite Johnny’s box office failure, it provided Pawan Kalyan with a unique learning experience, especially as a first-time director. The film still managed to generate a significant buzz around Kalyan’s directorial skills, and it served as an important step in his multifaceted career.
