The 30th CII-Partnership Summit kicked off in grand style at Visakhapatnam, drawing investors from across the globe to sign agreements with the Andhra Pradesh government, led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu. While the signing of MoUs and the presence of foreign delegates grabbed headlines, one absence did not go unnoticed — Jana Sena Party president and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan was missing from the inaugural session.
Interestingly, the Naidu government made no indication of sidelining Pawan Kalyan, prominently featuring his photograph in full-page government advertisements released to mark the event. Meanwhile, his Jana Sena Party cabinet colleagues — Civil Supplies Minister Nadendla Manohar and Tourism Minister Kandula Durgesh — did attend the summit.
Pawan Kalyan’s absence has sparked considerable discussion among media and political circles. Analysts speculate that he may have chosen to stay away because the event primarily focused on investments, whereas his key interests lie in Panchayat Raj, Environment, and Forests. However, questions remain as to why he directed Nadendla Manohar, whose Civil Supplies portfolio has little to do with investment matters, to attend in his stead.
“Naidu would certainly have invited Pawan Kalyan to the Vizag summit, but the latter appears to have had his own reasons to keep away. Perhaps he did not want to blend in with other cabinet colleagues, as the spotlight would have been on Naidu and Lokesh,” an analyst commented.
Yet, with prominent dignitaries like Vice President C.P. Radhakrishnan and Union Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal attending, Pawan Kalyan’s presence could have drawn attention from global industry leaders and showcased the collective leadership of the state government.
“In addition, attending such a high-profile event would have given Pawan Kalyan insights into how international collaborations can benefit the state. It would also have enhanced his visibility among global investors, aiding his long-term political and administrative influence,” the analyst added.
