Anurag Kashyap’s Acting Comeback Backed by Vijay Sethupathi
Anurag Kashyap, the filmmaker behind cult classics like Gangs of Wasseypur, has never shied away from discussing the highs and lows of his career. Once celebrated as one of Bollywood’s most inventive directors, Anurag experienced a downturn over the past decade, largely due to the commercial failure of several films and his discomfort with the evolving dynamics of mainstream Hindi cinema. This led him to step back from direction and unexpectedly venture into acting.
Surprisingly, Anurag has carved a niche for himself in the South Indian film industry, especially in Tamil cinema. His performances in films like Imaikkaa Nodigal and Leo were well-received, but it was his menacing role in Maharaja that truly stood out. His portrayal of the antagonist earned critical acclaim and played a major role in the film’s success.
In a recent interview, Anurag revealed a deeply personal story behind his decision to act in Maharaja. He admitted that he had no real inclination toward acting but agreed to the role after being persuaded by close friend and actor Vijay Sethupathi. At the time, Anurag was going through financial difficulties, particularly in managing expenses for his daughter’s wedding.
During a candid conversation, Anurag shared his situation with Vijay. Moved by his plight, Vijay not only offered support but insisted that Anurag take up the role in Maharaja. Though hesitant at first, Anurag eventually agreed — and the earnings from that project helped him cover his daughter’s wedding expenses.
Now, with Maharaja proving to be a success and his performance earning widespread appreciation, Anurag finds himself with more acting offers than ever. While direction remains his passion, Anurag acknowledges that acting provided him with the financial and emotional stability he needed when his filmmaking career was on hold.
