In a rare moment of political civility, former minister Perni Nani recently lauded Telugu Desam Party (TDP) Chief N. Chandrababu Naidu for his dignified approach toward political rivalry. Addressing mediapersons, Nani shared an anecdote highlighting Naidu’s refusal to target the families of political opponents, even amidst allegations and pressure to do so.
Nani, who was accused of involvement in the PDS rice scam, recounted how officials and political leaders repeatedly suggested action against his wife in connection with the case. However, Naidu firmly dismissed the idea, stating that involving the families of political figures in such matters was irrational and unnecessary. Instead, he emphasized that investigations should focus solely on those directly implicated, offering himself and his son as subjects of scrutiny if warranted.
“Though I am his political opponent, Naidu’s magnanimity and commitment to maintaining boundaries deserve appreciation,” Nani remarked, acknowledging Naidu’s adherence to high ethical standards even in adversarial situations.
This gesture stands in stark contrast to recent incidents in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly under the leadership of the Yuvajana Sramika Rythu Congress Party (YCP). During Assembly proceedings, several YCP leaders were criticized for their derogatory remarks about Naidu’s wife, Bhuvaneswari. The comments, described as deeply uncivil and disrespectful, sparked widespread outrage and exposed a lack of decorum.
The episode left Naidu visibly emotional, a rare occurrence for the seasoned politician known for his composure. Overcome by the blatant disrespect, he vowed to return to the Assembly only as Chief Minister, signaling his determination to restore dignity and respect in the political arena.
The stark difference in conduct underscores the divergent values upheld by the TDP and YCP leaders. While Naidu’s approach exemplifies restraint and respect, the behavior exhibited by some YCP leaders reflects a troubling disregard for civility and boundaries.
These incidents serve as a reminder of the critical importance of maintaining decorum in public life and the role of leaders in setting ethical standards for political discourse.
