Kuberaa Opens to Low Advance Bookings in Tamil Nadu

Sekhar Kammula’s much-anticipated bilingual social thriller Kuberaa, marking his direct foray into Tamil cinema, has opened to a surprisingly subdued advance booking in Tamil Nadu. Despite the high-profile collaboration with Dhanush and early buzz surrounding the film, the pre-release numbers have failed to meet expectations — particularly in key urban markets where Dhanush typically commands strong box office appeal.

Coming on the heels of the well-received Raayan, Kuberaa has registered one of the weakest advance booking responses for a Dhanush film in over a decade. The film’s socially relevant narrative and mainstream presentation were expected to resonate with Dhanush’s fanbase, yet the initial ticket sales suggest a disconnect between awareness and audience engagement.

Even Dhanush’s experimental ventures like Captain Miller saw stronger pre-release traction. This lag in momentum hints that the promotional campaign may not have fully connected with Tamil audiences, or that the film’s messaging didn’t cut through the post-Raayan buzz.

Interestingly, Kuberaa appears to be performing moderately better in the Telugu-speaking states, owing to Sekhar Kammula’s solid fan base in the region and the added star power of Nagarjuna. Still, it’s the Tamil Nadu box office performance that will largely shape the film’s commercial fate.

With the first shows set to begin shortly, the film’s trajectory now hinges on audience word-of-mouth and critical reception. A positive weekend could help turn the tide, but for now, Kuberaa enters theatres with cautious hopes and unusually low expectations for a Dhanush-led project.
