As part of the Republic Day 2026 celebrations in Delhi, an extraordinary spectacle unfolded along Kartavya Path, leaving spectators mesmerized. A special tableau celebrating Indian cinema, designed by acclaimed filmmaker Sanjay Leela Bhansali, showcased the grandeur and cultural richness of the country’s film heritage on a national stage. The display highlighted that cinema is not just entertainment—it is a reflection of India’s cultural legacy. From box-office milestones to artistic achievements, the tableau beautifully captured the evolution of Indian cinema.

Traditionally, Republic Day tableaux feature state cultures or military prowess. This year, however, was different. For the first time in the 77-year history of the celebrations, a film director conceptualized a moving tableau, offering a cinematic vision on a national platform. Bhansali’s signature opulent sets and grandeur were clearly visible, creating a visual ode to Indian cinema. Titled “Indian Cinema – A Visual Epic”, the tableau emphasized the pivotal role films play in shaping India’s cultural identity.

The tableau was divided into three segments, each reflecting a distinct era of Indian cinema. The first section paid homage to the pioneers, featuring vintage cameras and film reels that reminded viewers of the hard work and dedication of earlier generations. The middle section showcased Bhansali’s iconic set designs, traditional dance forms, and artistic splendor, reflecting the rich cultural tapestry of Indian films. The final segment highlighted contemporary cinema, with digital displays emphasizing box-office successes and India’s growing global influence in the film industry, underlining the country’s cinematic reach on international stages.

Reacting to this rare honor, Sanjay Leela Bhansali said, “Cinema is not just a medium of entertainment; it is an integral part of our cultural identity. Having the opportunity to showcase the grandeur of Indian cinema in the Republic Day parade is one of the greatest honors of my life.” He further noted that the global success of Indian films serves as a testament to India’s soft power. Spectators, including tourists and dignitaries, were left awestruck by this visual cinematic masterpiece.
