Sometimes, a single performance can open unexpected doors—and for Pooja Hegde, that moment came with Radhe Shyam. Now, she’s all set to surprise audiences again with her upcoming Tamil film Retro, where she stars alongside Suriya. While promoting the film, Pooja shared an intriguing backstory that connects the two projects in a meaningful way.

In a candid interview, Pooja revealed that Retro has pushed her into uncharted creative territory. “This film is really going to test me,” she said. With a compelling blend of action, dance, and intense emotional arcs, Pooja believes the film will show audiences a different side of her as a performer. One of the most memorable early moments, she recalled, was when director Karthik Subbaraj asked to meet her for the first time—without any makeup. “I love being natural in front of the camera, and this film gave me that freedom,” she shared.

The most surprising detail? It was her performance in Radhe Shyam—a film that underperformed commercially—that actually landed her the role in Retro. Karthik Subbaraj told her he was struck by the emotional depth she brought to that character, and knew she was the right fit for his story.

As Retro gears up for its May 1 release, Pooja hopes the film will usher in a new phase in her career. She also expressed her desire to take on more powerful roles in historical and warrior-themed narratives. With Retro, she steps into a role that promises not just to challenge her but also to captivate audiences—and perhaps redefine her trajectory in South Indian cinema.
