Proud To Be Indian, I am Not Islam Scholar: Rahman

In India, religious sentiments and cinematic liberties can never go hand in hand. Academy Award winning Indian music composer AR Rahman is in centre of storm when Raza Academy initiated a Fatwa issued by Muhammad Akhtar, the Chief Mufti in Mumbai. The Fatwa was against Iranian director Majid Majidi and AR Rahman for scoring music to ‘Muhammaad: Messenger of God.’

The world renowned music director posted a printed letter on his Facebook page for all those people who showed concern in past one week of happenings. Rahman is not a musician of India, he is scoring music as a profession and religious shades were never a part of his agenda.

I am not a scholar of Islam. I follow the middle path and am part of traditionalist and part rationalist. I live in the western and eastern worlds and try to love all people for what they are, without judging them. I didn’t direct or produce the movie Muhammad, Messenger Of God. I just did the music. My spiritual experiences of working on the film are very personal and I would prefer not to share these.

My decision to compose the music for the film was made in good faith and with no intention of causing offence.

We are indeed fortunate and blessed to live in a country like India where religious freedom is practiced and where the aim of all communities is to live in peace and harmony sans confusion and violence,” AR Rahman quoted.

Let us set a precedent in clearing conflict with grace and dignity and not trigger violence in words or actions, he rightly requested.
