Filmmaker Puri Jagannadh’s upcoming project with Vijay Sethupathi, Slumdog: 33 Temple Road, is reportedly facing a temporary setback, with financial concerns emerging as a key issue.
According to sources from the Telugu Film Chamber of Commerce, the director has pending dues of around ₹5 crore related to earlier arbitration proceedings involving Telangana distributors. It is being said that until these dues are addressed, the release of his upcoming films could encounter hurdles.
This development comes in the wake of back-to-back disappointments like Liger and Double iSmart, after which Puri Jagannadh has largely stayed away from the spotlight. While the announcement of Slumdog: 33 Temple Road initially created strong buzz, the absence of updates—such as posters, release date, or promotional content—has led to growing speculation about the film’s status.
However, industry insiders offer a different perspective. Reports suggest that the film is already complete, with both shooting and post-production wrapped up. The songs are said to be finalized, and a final copy is ready. The delay in promotions is reportedly a calculated move, with the team waiting for the Tamil Nadu elections to conclude, aiming for better visibility and to avoid potential box office disruptions.
Adding another angle, a trade body member has described the issue as an old dispute. As per their statement, Puri Jagannadh is not legally bound to repay the amount since the films were sold to distributors on a non-refundable basis. The director had reportedly agreed to repay on moral grounds, which limits the chamber’s authority to impose restrictions.
It is also understood that a distributor from Karnataka had previously taken the legal route, and Puri Jagannadh prefers resolving the matter through court rather than arbitration via trade bodies. If the issue fully shifts into the legal domain, the chamber’s role could become minimal.
For now, Slumdog: 33 Temple Road remains in a state of uncertainty—caught between financial disputes, strategic delays, and ongoing industry speculation.
