Even as uncertainty continues to surround its release date, Thalapathy Vijay’s much-anticipated farewell film Jana Nayagan has turned into a major flashpoint in national politics. The latest intervention by Leader of the Opposition and senior Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has further intensified speculation about a possible political alignment between Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) and the Indian National Congress.
Coming out strongly in support of Jana Nayagan, which is currently facing censor-related hurdles, Rahul Gandhi termed the alleged attempt to stall the film’s release as an “attack on Tamil culture.” Taking to social media platform X, he launched a sharp attack on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the BJP-led Centre. His post quickly went viral, drawing widespread attention across national media and political circles.
Rahul Gandhi wrote, “The I&B Ministry’s attempt to block ‘Jana Nayagan’ is an attack on Tamil culture. Mr Modi, you will never succeed in suppressing the voice of the Tamil people.” His remarks came a day after the makers of Jana Nayagan approached the Supreme Court, challenging the Madras High Court’s stay on granting censor certification to the film.
This is not the first instance of Rahul Gandhi publicly backing Vijay. In 2017, when Vijay’s blockbuster Mersal ran into controversy over its criticism of certain Union government policies, Rahul had openly defended the actor and criticised the Modi government. More recently, Congress leader and Tamil Nadu in-charge Girish Chodankar accused the BJP of misusing central agencies to target political opponents, stating that while political disagreements are natural, targeting an artist’s creative expression is unacceptable.
These developments have fueled fresh speculation about a potential Congress–TVK alliance ahead of the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections. Rahul Gandhi’s open endorsement of Vijay and his film has further strengthened these rumours, although no official confirmation has been made by either party so far.
Political observers note that the Congress has a long history of contesting Tamil Nadu elections through alliances. In the 2021 Assembly elections, the Congress partnered with the DMK-led alliance under Chief Minister M.K. Stalin and emerged victorious. Against this backdrop, a possible tie-up with Vijay’s TVK cannot be ruled out.
With elections fast approaching and Jana Nayagan at the centre of a growing political storm, it remains to be seen how the evolving dynamics will shape Tamil Nadu’s high-stakes political landscape in the months ahead.
