The NDA-led Central Government has officially announced plans to conduct the long-delayed population census, initially scheduled for 2021. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnav briefed the media, stating that the census will be completed before the upcoming elections. The census, which was postponed indefinitely due to the Covid-19 pandemic, will now be conducted alongside the caste census.
It is important to note that the Telangana government had already carried out its own caste census, a move strongly supported by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and Telangana Chief Minister Revanth Reddy. With the central government now proposing to implement a nationwide caste census, Rahul Gandhi has laid out several demands to ensure the process is comprehensive and fair.
Gandhi has called for a “people’s census,” one that is consultative and inclusive, rather than a bureaucratic exercise. He has also insisted on the removal of the 50% cap on reservations, a longstanding issue that he believes restricts opportunities for marginalized communities.
