At the trailer launch of The Girlfriend, director Rahul Ravindran offered an emotional glimpse into the deeply personal journey behind his upcoming film. “Sometimes, a tiny memory refuses to fade and grows into something huge—that’s how The Girlfriend came alive,” he shared, describing the project as an “intense emotional experience” rather than a conventional love story.
Rahul emphasized that The Girlfriend wasn’t made to follow trends but to stay true to raw human emotions. “We didn’t make this chasing trends. It’s honest, real, and emotional. Every director says that, but we really mean it,” he said, urging audiences to support the film and help it “reach as many hearts as possible.”
He couldn’t help but praise his lead actors, Rashmika Mandanna and Dheekshith Shetty, calling their performances “a blessing” for the film. “Watching them bring their characters to life was one of the most beautiful experiences of my career,” Rahul noted, adding with a smile, “I’m the audience first, and as an audience, they gave their all.”
The story of The Girlfriend has been with Rahul for nearly 12 years, sparked by a small incident during his hostel days that stayed with him and evolved over time. Although the screenplay was completed five years ago, he said the moment finally felt right now. When asked if the title was inspired by his own past, he quipped, “She’s been my wife for 11 years now—there’s no girlfriend,” revealing the playful yet personal connection he has with the story.
Calling the film his “genuine girlfriend,” Rahul described it as a labor of love built over a decade. With its blend of heartfelt storytelling, emotional depth, and strong performances, The Girlfriend promises to be more than just a romance—it’s a story that lingers, long after the credits roll.
