Rajinikanth’s Brinda Theatre Demolished After 40 Years!
The iconic Brinda Theatre in Chennai, which was inaugurated by legendary actor Rajinikanth in 1985, has been demolished, marking the end of a significant chapter in the city’s film history. Known affectionately as the “Rajini Theatre” by his fans, this landmark in North Chennai had been a popular destination for moviegoers, particularly those eager to watch Rajinikanth’s blockbuster hits, for nearly four decades.
Rajinikanth, who began his film career in 1975 with Apoorva Raagangal, has since appeared in a wide array of films across Tamil, Telugu, Kannada, Hindi, Malayalam, and Bengali. To commemorate his 100th film, he inaugurated Brinda Theatre in 1985, which soon became synonymous with his stardom, screening his films for devoted fans.
However, like many historic theaters in Tamil Nadu, Brinda Theatre faced challenges due to changing times, dwindling audiences, and shifting viewing habits. Earlier this week, the theater, originally owned by Loganathan Chettiar and later managed by his sons Viswanathan and Chandrasekhar, closed its doors for good. Reports indicate that a private construction company has acquired the land with plans to develop flats in its place.
Panneerselvam, who had managed the theater for 40 years, recalled the emotional significance it held for Rajinikanth’s fans, saying, “Even though it was called Brinda Theatre, for fans, it was always Rajini Theatre.” The theater was the go-to place for every Rajinikanth release, and the energy from his enthusiastic fans was unmatched. With its demolition, another nostalgic chapter of Tamil cinema has come to a close, leaving behind cherished memories for generations of film lovers.
