The title glimpse event of the upcoming Mahesh Babu–Rajamouli film in Varanasi was conducted on a grand scale, featuring a massive LED setup powered by multiple generators. However, technical glitches led to repeated delays in the screening, creating visible tension at the venue. Director S.S. Rajamouli appeared upset as the interruptions continued, and during the stressful moment, his comments referencing Hanuman quickly went viral, triggering widespread reactions from netizens and Hindu groups.
Writer Vijayendra Prasad defended the film team, noting that Mahesh Babu had worked extremely hard and adding that while some films are made by people, others receive divine support. He emphasised that Hanuman always holds a special place in Rajamouli’s heart.
However, when the technical failures persisted, Rajamouli remarked that he does not strongly believe in God and questioned why Hanuman did not intervene if divine guidance was indeed present. These comments were perceived by many devotees as insensitive, with critics arguing that it was inappropriate to link technical errors to religious beliefs. Several pointed out the inconsistency of attributing success to human effort while holding God responsible for setbacks.
Social media users openly criticised the director for making such remarks on a public platform. One netizen wrote, “What is the connection between technical issues and Hanuman? You say you admire the Ramayana but then claim you do not believe in Lord Rama. It sounds like a sweet shop owner saying he doesn’t like sweets but sells them because customers buy them. Personal beliefs are fine, but as a legendary director, such public comments are not appropriate. Crores of Hindus have supported your films—at least respect their sentiments.”
Another user added that if Rajamouli does not believe in God, he should refrain from invoking Hanuman’s name in a negative context.
The incident has sparked an ongoing online debate about faith, responsibility, and the role of public figures in addressing sensitive cultural subjects.
