Rajinikanth Was Set to Play a Villain in Lokesh’s Dropped Fantasy Film

Superstar Rajinikanth and director Lokesh Kanagaraj’s upcoming film Coolie is generating massive buzz ahead of its grand release on August 14. Touted as one of the biggest action thrillers of the year, the film promises a power-packed cinematic experience.

In a recent interview, Lokesh shared a fascinating revelation about how Coolie came to be. Interestingly, Coolie wasn’t the first script Lokesh had in mind for Rajinikanth. Initially, he had written a fantasy-based project where Rajini was to play the main antagonist. Surprisingly, the superstar had agreed to take on the negative role.

Lokesh said, “The first script I wrote for Rajini sir was a fantasy film, where he would be the villain. I was still looking for the hero. Rajini sir liked the idea and was on board. But I eventually dropped it as the film required heavy VFX and a large cast, which would take around 1.5 to 2 years to complete. I didn’t want to delay and waste Rajini sir’s valuable time, especially during this prime phase of his career. I was also dealing with some personal challenges back then, which made me rethink.”

He further added, “So, I went back to Rajini sir and explained why we should put that story on hold. That’s when I pitched the idea of Coolie — and he immediately loved it. That’s how the film started.”

Following Lokesh’s comments, fans are now even more curious about that shelved fantasy film. Given Lokesh’s knack for writing intense antagonist roles — like the unforgettable Rolex cameo in Vikram — the thought of Rajinikanth playing a powerful villain is electrifying. It would undoubtedly be a bold and refreshing move, likely to create nationwide excitement.

Now, the big question is — will Lokesh revisit that fantasy script in the future and turn it into a reality?
