Sources have stated that the Tamil Nadu Government on Friday has sought the dismissal of a petition pleading for release from jail filed by Nalini Sriharan, the life convict in the former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi assassination case, on the grounds that the Center was yet to respond to the State’s proposal to release her and
six other convicts in the case.
Earlier Nalini has moved the Madras High Court seeking to be released from jail as per a 1994 Government Order that has provided for the release of life convicts who have spent more than 20 years in jail and the Supreme Court had upheld the capital punishment for four persons and has awarded life sentences to three others.
Nalini has prayed for her release on humanitarian grounds and the state government is in counter affidavit and has opposed the plea. The Tamilnadu government on March 2nd 2016 has written to the center for seeking concurrence and the center is yet to respond to the case.
