Kuala Lumpur, February 10 (IANS) – The Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia marked a significant milestone as it commemorated 25 years of its presence in the country, coinciding with the birth anniversary of the revered spiritual leader, Swami Vivekananda. In partnership with the High Commission of India in Kuala Lumpur and the Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), the mission recently organized the second event in a series titled ‘Arise, Awake’ at the Penang Institute. The event drew over 150 attendees, including children from local Tamil schools, members of the local media, and people from across various sectors of society.

This event was part of a broader initiative celebrating 25 years of the Ramakrishna Mission’s activities in Malaysia, under the guidance of its President, Swami Supriyananda. The introductory event of this series, titled ‘Be and Make,’ took place earlier in Kuala Lumpur on January 12.

Y B Dato Seri Sundarajoo Somu, Penang State EXCO (State Minister) for Housing and Environment, represented the Chief Minister of Penang and graced the event as the chief guest. Indian High Commissioner to Malaysia, B N Reddy, welcomed the gathering and praised Swami Supriyananda for his leadership and dedication to the spiritual and social welfare of the community over the past 15 years.

Swami Satyalokananda, Vice-President of the Ramakrishna Mission Singapore, delivered the keynote address, focusing on the enduring relevance of Swami Vivekananda’s teachings in today’s world. The Indian High Commission also organized an exhibition showcasing the life and teachings of Swami Vivekananda, alongside a display of books on the spiritual leader’s philosophy.

Swami Vivekananda, whose teachings emphasize tolerance, peace, and universal brotherhood, remains a global symbol of spiritual and social harmony. His visit to Malaysia in 1893 left a lasting legacy, with an ashram built by Sri Lankan Tamil immigrants in his honor in 1904. Ten years ago, Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi unveiled a 12-foot bronze statue of Swami Vivekananda in Malaysia, symbolizing his timeless influence on the cultural and spiritual ties between India and Malaysia.

In his address, the Indian High Commissioner commended the Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia for its continued efforts to promote Swami Vivekananda’s principles, which transcend religious and cultural boundaries. The teachings of Swami Vivekananda have become a bridge for fostering Indo-Malaysian relations, with the Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia’s branches across the country promoting character building, spiritual growth, and universal brotherhood accessible to all people, regardless of their background.

The Ramakrishna Mission Malaysia continues to play a crucial role in the spiritual and social development of the region, serving as a beacon of Swami Vivekananda’s vision for self-reliance, education, and social service.
