Ramaphosa Prioritizes ANC Renewal in 2025

South African President and ANC leader Cyril Ramaphosa declared that the renewal of the African National Congress (ANC) is the top priority for 2025. He made these remarks during the ANC’s annual “January 8 statement” at Mandela Park Stadium in Khayelitsha, Cape Town, where thousands of supporters gathered to mark the party’s 113th anniversary.

In his speech, Ramaphosa outlined six key tasks to drive the country’s progress in the year ahead. While the renewal of the ANC remains his primary focus, addressing South Africa’s water crisis, improving local governance, and revitalizing the economy are also high on the agenda.

Ramaphosa emphasized the gravity of the ANC’s situation, stating that the results of the 2024 elections, in which the ANC failed to secure an outright majority, underscore the party’s existential crisis. “We must either renew or perish,” he said, urging for a swift and determined approach to revitalization.

The president stressed that building the ANC’s capacity to fulfill its historic mission remains crucial. This includes strengthening ANC branches in communities, making them centers of development that actively engage with citizens and address their concerns.

Ramaphosa also outlined five additional priority tasks for the year: improving local governance, ensuring water and energy security, promoting inclusive economic growth to generate jobs, combating crime and corruption to create safer communities, fostering national dialogue to build a more unified South Africa, and contributing to a better Africa and world.

“We will renew and rebuild the ANC to unite all South Africans and provide clear, decisive, and ethical leadership,” he assured, emphasizing the party’s commitment to these goals.
