Rani Mukerji described winning her first National Film Award after a 30-year career as an “emotional milestone,” dedicating the honour to her late father, Ram Mukherjee. The award for Best Actress came for her role in Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway, which she received from President Droupadi Murmu at the 71st National Film Awards. Directed by Ashima Chibber, the film released in March 2023.

Speaking about the award, the 47-year-old actor said, “This recognition means the world to me, and I dedicate it to my late father, who always dreamed of this moment for me. I miss him deeply today, and it’s his blessings, along with my mother’s constant strength and inspiration, that guided me through portraying Mrs Chatterjee.”

Mukerji also expressed gratitude to her fans and the film’s cast and crew. “To my incredible fans, thank you for standing by me through every high and low. Your love and support have been my greatest motivation. Seeing your joy at this award brings me immense happiness,” she added.

Mrs Chatterjee vs Norway tells the story of Debika Chatterjee, an Indian mother in Norway fighting to regain custody of her children after being forcibly separated from them. Calling the film “a tribute to all mothers worldwide,” Mukerji said the role resonated deeply with her personally as a mother. “The film captures the unbreakable spirit of an immigrant mother, fighting against all odds in a foreign land to protect her child. Playing this role was profoundly personal for me,” she noted.
