Who would have imagined that an ‘A’ certified film, which initially courted controversies and was branded a propaganda movie by a section of audiences, would go on to become the biggest grosser of the year in under three weeks?
Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar has achieved the unthinkable in just 17 days and is now firmly eyeing a historic milestone in the coming days. The spy thriller, infused with strong patriotic elements, has been on a record-breaking run since its release on December 5, and has now emerged as the highest-grossing film of the year, surpassing major blockbusters like Chhaava and Kantara: Chapter 1.
According to the makers, Dhurandhar has amassed a staggering ₹870 crore gross worldwide by the end of its 17-day run, securing the number one position at the box office this year. This achievement is particularly remarkable given the film’s mixed initial reviews and its A certificate, which traditionally limits audience reach. The film is now poised to become the first A-rated Indian film to enter the coveted ₹1000 crore club.
Dhurandhar opened to decent numbers, backed by a strong first weekend. However, it was the exceptional word of mouth that truly propelled the film forward. The movie wrapped up its first week with an impressive ₹218 crore, and showed no signs of slowing down in the second week, adding another ₹261.5 crore to its tally.
Defying expectations, even after the release of Avatar 3, the Aditya Dhar directorial continued its dream run. During the third weekend, the film stormed past the ₹800 crore mark, leaving trade circles and critics stunned. Last Sunday alone, Dhurandhar clocked a massive ₹40 crore gross, overtaking the lifetime collections of Kantara: Chapter 1 to become the top box-office performer of the year.
With the Christmas holidays and New Year festivities around the corner, the film’s momentum is only expected to grow stronger. Dhurandhar is all set to join the elite ₹1000 crore club soon, while also laying a solid foundation for its much-anticipated sequel, which is expected to generate massive buzz well ahead of its release.
