Reed Hastings, the co-founder of Netflix, is set to step down as chairman by the end of June, marking the end of an era nearly three decades after launching the company. In a letter to shareholders, Netflix stated that Hastings will now shift his focus toward philanthropy and other personal pursuits.
Reflecting on his journey, Hastings shared that Netflix transformed his life in countless ways, recalling January 2016—when the platform became available across most of the globe—as one of his most memorable moments. He emphasized that his greatest contribution wasn’t a single decision, but rather building a culture centered on member satisfaction, long-term success, and innovation that future leaders could carry forward.
He also expressed confidence in the company’s leadership, thanking co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters for their commitment, which allows him to step away and explore new directions.
The announcement comes alongside Netflix’s strong financial performance. The company reported a 16.2% increase in revenue for Q1 2026, reaching $12.25 billion, while net income surged nearly 83% to $5.28 billion. This growth was largely driven by higher subscription pricing and increased advertising revenue, helping boost overall earnings.
Notably, this marks the first earnings report following Netflix’s unsuccessful attempt to acquire Warner Bros. Discovery. Despite that setback, the company’s performance highlights its resilience and ability to adapt in a competitive market.
Netflix credited Hastings with building a culture of innovation, integrity, and high performance, noting that his vision reshaped global entertainment and continues to influence audiences worldwide.
As Hastings prepares to step down, Netflix is entering a new phase of growth, with a strong focus on emerging technologies like generative AI. The company has already signaled this direction by acquiring InterPositive, an AI venture linked to Ben Affleck, underlining its ambition to stay ahead in the evolving entertainment landscape.
