Thirty-six years after his landmark debut Shiva, filmmaker Ram Gopal Varma has issued a heartfelt apology to a child actor from one of the film’s most iconic sequences — the cycle chase scene. The director expressed regret for putting the young actor through risky shots during the stunt.
Taking to X, RGV shared an update about the child actor Sushma, revealing that she is now based in the US and pursuing research in Artificial Intelligence and Cognitive Science. He wrote,
“This is the grown-up girl Sushma from the iconic cycle chase scene in Shiva, where she is sitting scared on the bar with @Iamnagarjuna cycling in tension. @symbolicsushi is now doing research in AI and Cognitive Science in the USA.”
Responding to his post, Sushma said,
“Thank you, sir! Honoured to be remembered as part of Shiva’s legacy. That experience as a child was unforgettable, and I’m grateful to have contributed to such an iconic film. Wishing you @RGVzoomin and @iamnagarjuna continued success with the Shiva 4K release!”
Ram Gopal Varma then followed up with a sincere apology:
“Hey @symbolicsushi, please accept my sincere apologies after 36 years for subjecting you to such a traumatic experience which I didn’t realise at that time. The directorial greed in me took over, blinding me to the risks faced by a little girl like you. I apologise once again.”
For the uninitiated, Shiva marked RGV’s directorial debut and featured Nagarjuna and Amala in lead roles, with Raghuvaran playing the antagonist. The film, which redefined Telugu cinema with its raw storytelling and technical brilliance, was later remade in Tamil as Udhayam, which also became a huge success.
