Once celebrated for cinematic gems like Shiva, Satya, and Sarkar, director Ram Gopal Varma seems to have shifted gears in recent years — from telling compelling stories to chasing headlines. His latest release, Saaree, hit the screens today, but unfortunately, it fails to leave any lasting impression.
While the film’s concept had potential, the execution is lackluster. The storyline is flat, overly familiar, and offers nothing new or engaging. Instead of building suspense or exploring the depth of its idea, the narrative drifts aimlessly from scene to scene, lacking coherence and emotional depth. At times, Saaree feels more like an unfinished draft than a completed film.
Directed by debutant Giri Kamal under Varma’s mentorship, the film follows a formulaic path without offering a fresh perspective. What stands out — and not in a good way — is the film’s overreliance on skin show, particularly in the portrayal of the lead actress. This creative choice has been criticized by viewers, especially in Tamil Nadu, where the film also released. One viewer remarked, “The title is Saaree, but the actress is barely wearing one. What’s the point?”
With little substance and a misguided focus, Saaree squanders an opportunity to be something bold and thought-provoking. Instead, it joins a growing list of forgettable projects in RGV’s recent filmography. Audience turnout has been sparse, the reception is mixed at best, and the film ultimately leaves behind more confusion than impact.
