Before beginning his speech, Shetty clarified that he would speak in Kannada as it allowed him to express himself “from the heart.” However, he refrained from using either English or Telugu, which many felt would have been more inclusive for the audience present. This decision has been perceived by some as a lack of respect toward the native language of the region.
While Kannada and Telugu share similarities, Shetty, who is reportedly not fluent in Telugu or English, opted to remain with Kannada alone. Social media reactions suggest that many fans see this as a dismissive gesture, especially given how warmly Telugu audiences have embraced Kannada films in recent years.
The backlash has drawn comparisons with other Kannada stars, including Yash, Shiv Rajkumar, and several heroines, who have made conscious efforts to connect with Telugu fans by speaking at least partly in their language during promotional events.
