Rocket Fired from Gaza After 10-Day Lull; 17 Killed in IDF Operations

Jerusalem, June 10 (IANS) – The Israeli military announced on Tuesday that it had intercepted a projectile fired from the northern Gaza Strip, marking the first such launch in 10 days.

The rocket triggered air raid sirens near Zikim beach, but no casualties or damage were reported, according to an official statement. Israel’s Ynet news outlet noted that such launches have become infrequent, as Israel’s ongoing 20-month military campaign has devastated much of the Gaza territory.

Meanwhile, Israeli forces continued operations across the enclave, including an attack near a food distribution point run by the Gaza Humanitarian Foundation. According to Gaza health officials, at least 17 people were killed and 130 others wounded in two separate shooting incidents as civilians gathered for aid.

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed that its troops opened fire near Wadi Gaza, claiming the shots were intended as warnings to deter individuals approaching the area who were deemed a threat. “An initial inquiry suggests that the number of reported individuals injured does not align with IDF data,” the military said, adding that the incident remains under investigation.

Gaza’s health ministry reported that the death toll from Israeli operations since October 2023 has reached at least 54,927, with over 126,000 people injured.

This latest rocket interception follows a similar incident last month when the Israeli military shot down a projectile fired from Gaza. That attack, too, caused no injuries and went unclaimed by any militant group. On that occasion, air raid sirens were heard in Israel’s southern Lakhish region.

Tensions remain high across the region, with intermittent rocket fire and ongoing military activity exacerbating the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.
