Khartoum, Feb 18 (IANS) — The Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) have announced significant advancements in their ongoing military campaign against the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), marking key victories in strategic regions across the country.
In Bahri city, located to the north of the capital Khartoum, the SAF has successfully seized control of the Kafouri area, the last major stronghold of the RSF within the city. A statement posted on the SAF’s official Facebook page revealed that special forces, operating from the Al-Markhiat Military Base, advanced steadily through the Kafouri neighborhood after a series of intense operations that culminated in the clearance of RSF militia forces. The capture of Kafouri represents a significant milestone in the SAF’s broader military campaign across the key cities of Khartoum, Omdurman, and Bahri. Previously, the Kafouri area had served as a crucial base for RSF operations, including artillery attacks targeting army-held territories in Omdurman.
In another key development, the SAF announced the successful recapture of Al-Rahad city in North Kordofan State following prolonged clashes with RSF forces. The statement emphasized that the army had decisively crushed RSF elements in the region and was advancing along the Al-Rahad axis. Al-Rahad’s strategic importance stems from its position as a vital crossroads, linking major roads and serving as a key station on Sudan’s railway line, connecting the western and central regions to the east. The city’s recapture follows the earlier recovery of Um Ruwaba, the second-largest city in North Kordofan, on January 30.
Since the onset of the conflict in April 2023, the RSF has gradually lost control of several key areas in central Sudan, including strategic territories in Gezira and Sinnar states. The RSF has also seen significant setbacks in Khartoum, with the loss of critical infrastructure such as the Khartoum Oil Refinery in the Al-Jaili area, located north of Bahri.
The ongoing conflict between the SAF and RSF has escalated dramatically, resulting in a devastating humanitarian crisis. According to the latest estimates from international organizations, the violence has claimed more than 29,680 lives, with no resolution in sight. The situation remains fluid, with both sides continuing to engage in fierce combat across multiple fronts.
As Sudan grapples with this protracted and destructive conflict, the international community remains concerned about the escalating toll on civilians and the long-term stability of the country.
