Samsung, a leader in smartphone camera technology, is reportedly developing a groundbreaking 500-megapixel camera sensor for its upcoming Galaxy devices. This high-resolution sensor could debut with the Galaxy S25 Ultra, further strengthening Samsung’s dominance in mobile imaging. Along with this, Samsung is also working on advanced three-layer stacked sensors for Apple, potentially marking a significant shift in iPhone camera technology starting with the iPhone 18 series, expected in 2026.
Tipster @Jukanlosreve on X shared that Samsung is creating a 500MP sensor for the Galaxy lineup, which could set new standards for mobile photography with enhanced image processing capabilities in the S25 Ultra. This would allow Samsung to push the boundaries of smartphone imaging, making a considerable impact in the photography space.
In addition to its own devices, Samsung is reportedly designing a three-layer stacked sensor for Apple, configured with PD-TR-Logic. This sensor is said to outperform Sony’s Exmor RS image sensors, which currently power iPhone cameras. If these rumours are true, the iPhone 18 series could be the first to feature Samsung’s sensors, including a new 48MP sensor that measures 1/2.6 inches in size. This shift could signal the end of Apple’s long-standing partnership with Sony for CMOS image sensors.
The iPhone 18 series is also expected to introduce variable aperture technology, enabling users to adjust the aperture for better performance in various lighting conditions. In terms of performance, the iPhone 18 lineup is rumoured to be powered by Apple’s next-generation A20 chipset, built using TSMC’s advanced 2-nanometer process, ensuring improved efficiency and performance.
This development follows reports that the iPhone 17 Pro models will feature the A19 Pro chip, while the standard iPhone 17 models may include A18 or A19 chipsets.
Earlier predictions from renowned analyst Ming-Chi Kuo suggested that Apple would transition from Sony’s image sensors to Samsung’s more advanced offerings for future iPhones. If these rumours are accurate, the collaboration between Samsung and Apple could redefine mobile photography, particularly with the iPhone 18 series.
