The sudden death of actor, producer, and industrialist Sanjay Kapoor has led to a major family dispute over his vast fortune, estimated to be around ₹30,000 crore. Last month, while playing polo in London, Sanjay tragically passed away after a honeybee entered his airway and stung him, triggering a severe allergic reaction that led to a cardiac arrest.
In the days following his death, the focus quickly shifted from grief to questions about inheritance and control of his companies. Reports suggest that Sanjay’s mother, Rani Kapoor, has raised doubts about the circumstances surrounding her son’s sudden demise and has indirectly expressed dissatisfaction with the way his wife, Priya Sachdev, is handling matters related to his assets and business affairs.
Adding fuel to the speculation, Priya Sachdev recently updated her social media profile, naming herself as “Non-Executive Director at Sona Comstar,” an auto components company that Sanjay once headed, and changed her name from “Priya Sachdev Kapoor” to “Priya Sanjay Kapoor.” These changes, made soon after her husband’s passing, have surprised many and sparked discussions about her intentions.
Even at the time of Sanjay’s funeral in New Delhi, after his body was flown back from London, the topic of succession dominated family conversations. Sanjay’s complex family background has made the matter more sensitive—he was married three times, first to Nandita Mahtani, then to actress Karisma Kapoor, and finally to model Priya Sachdev. His children from previous marriages, his current wife, and his mother are all seen as stakeholders in his estate.
It is reported that Rani Kapoor is unhappy with the way things are unfolding. Before an important board meeting at Sona Comstar, she wrote a letter claiming that she had been made to sign certain documents without full explanation and expressed her discomfort with “certain individuals” who she feels are presenting themselves as family representatives. Though she did not name anyone, it is widely believed her comments were directed at Priya. Meanwhile, Sanjay’s daughter Safira has changed her name on social media, which many see as a sign of growing family rifts.
Karisma Kapoor’s name has also been brought up in this inheritance issue, but close sources clarified that she has no claim to Sanjay’s assets. Reports indicate that Karisma had already secured what was due to her and her children Kiaan and Samaira through a legal settlement years ago, which included properties in Mumbai. Karisma and Sanjay, who married in 2003, separated due to personal differences and finalized their divorce in 2016. After their divorce, Sanjay married Priya Sachdev, who had also been previously divorced. Sanjay was said to have taken full responsibility for all his children and ensured they lacked nothing.
For now, the battle over Sanjay Kapoor’s wealth and legacy continues, with Priya Sachdev’s recent moves and family tensions adding new layers of intrigue to an already complex situation.
