Sarvam Maya: A Quiet Supernatural Tale That Gently Explores Faith and Doubt

Share

Sarvam Maya, the Malayalam film that found appreciation in theatres, arrives as a refreshing departure from the current trend of intense violence, dark atmospheres, and heavy investigative thrillers. Quiet and restrained in its approach, the film slowly seeps into the viewer’s mind without relying on loud dramatics or exaggerated moments.

Unlike conventional horror films packed with jump scares, blaring background scores, or forced comedy tracks, Sarvam Maya consciously avoids both extremes. It neither aims to frighten nor to entertain through over-the-top humor. Instead, it gently explores a fragile mental state, a personal life crisis, and a man torn between belief and disbelief.

The story revolves around a man born into a traditional Namboodiri Brahmin family and raised on Vedic rituals and customs. The sudden death of his mother deeply shakes his faith in God, pushing him toward atheism. He discards his sacred thread and follows his passion for music, working as a guitarist while aspiring to make a mark in the film industry. Despite his talent, opportunities remain elusive, and mounting financial pressures push him to the edge.

Left with no choice, and on the advice of his brother-in-law, he reluctantly returns to performing priestly rituals—not out of faith, but purely for survival. His life takes an unexpected turn when he is asked to perform a ritual to cure a teenage boy believed to be possessed.

Nivin Pauly’s performance forms the backbone of the film. His portrayal of inner conflict is honest, subtle, and deeply relatable. The humor, when it appears, is situational and warm, adding gentle layers without disrupting the narrative tone.

Sarvam Maya may not cater to audiences expecting loud horror-comedy or fast-paced thrills. However, for viewers who appreciate calm, sensible storytelling with emotional depth, it offers a quietly satisfying cinematic experience.

Directed by Akhil Sathyan, the supernatural comedy-fantasy stars Nivin Pauly in the lead role, with Riya Shibu and Aju Varghese in key supporting roles. The film is set to stream on JioHotstar from January 30, 2026.
