Ranbir Kapoor Faces Backlash Over Ramayan Role
Bollywood’s leading actors Ranveer Singh and Ranbir Kapoor have both faced strong criticism over their recent role choices. Ranveer Singh, for instance, once dreamed of playing the iconic Indian superhero Shaktimaan. However, Mukesh Khanna — who originally created and portrayed the character — firmly rejected the idea. Khanna stated that, while Ranveer is undoubtedly a talented actor, he personally felt the role didn’t suit him. He even described Ranveer’s personality and mentioned that, despite spending hours with him, his opinion remained unchanged.
Now, Ranbir Kapoor finds himself in a similar storm. His casting as Lord Ram in the upcoming Ramayan has sparked major backlash. Uday Mahurkar, a political figure, wrote an open letter to the Government of India, demanding Ranbir’s removal from the role. Mahurkar argued that Ranbir, who played a violent and morally dark character in Animal, was unfit to portray the ideal and virtuous Lord Ram.
However, many point out that this argument overlooks the nature of acting itself. Actors are not bound to a single image; they take on diverse roles. Ranbir’s transition from a ruthless character in Animal to a divine role in Ramayan is part of his craft — and after this, he may even play a gangster again. Netizens argue that politicising such casting choices is unfair and unnecessary.
For perspective, Arun Govil — who famously played Lord Ram in the 1987 Ramayan TV series — also portrayed a bold romantic character in the film Bistar. There was no outrage then, so why now? Critics say people are over-politicising everything these days. Ultimately, an actor’s personal life should not dictate their on-screen roles; what truly matters is how convincingly they portray the character. That said, when it comes to portraying revered mythological figures, aspects like mannerisms, attire, and body language must be handled with care to maintain authenticity.
