Indians across the country and those living offshore as well are today celebrating the Independence Day with lot of fervor. Well, what’s the true definition of Independence?
Remember the famous statement of Mahatma Gandhi – “the day a woman can walk freely at midnight on the roads, that day we can say that India achieved independence”. Going by Gandhi’s statement, which is unarguably the best definition of Independence, India has broken free from the shackles of the British but our very own demons are still forcing the people of this country live in fear.
On the eve of 71st Independence Day, today, a “12-year-old girl” returning home after taking part in Independence Day celebrations at school was kidnapped and raped in “broad daylight”.
As per the police report, the Class 8 student was walking back home after celebrations at her school (in Chandigarh) when an armed man dragged her into the nearby children’s traffic park and allegedly raped her. What’s more agonizing is that the gruesome crime took place on the eve of “Independence day”, in “broad daylight”, in a well developed city like Chandigarh.
Police further divulged that the rapist let the girl go after threatening her against informing anyone about the rape. The girl however told her family about it when she reached home, and the police were called.
