Andhra Pradesh’s new State Election Commissioner, Nilam Sawhney, got to work as soon as she assumed her office on April 1st. She released the notification for the Parishad elections on her very first day.
Members of the Bharatiya Janata Party filed a House Petition in the High Court, against Sawhney’s poll notification. Additionally, three individuals have filed another petition, stating that they haven’t been given the chance to file nominations because the Parishad elections are being taken up from where they were stopped last year.
The High Court then informed SEC Nilam Sawhney to file a counter to these petitions by tomorrow. The petitioners have also told the HC that Sawhney did not hold an all-party meeting before releasing the notification and that she did it later on.
It is being expected that Sawheny would say the same thing she’s been saying so far, that there is no point in starting the elections anew as the process already started in March last year, and that the same nodal officers would continue this time as well. It is now to be seen what the HC will say
