Sekhar Kammula Reflects on His Evolving Filmmaking Journey

In a recent interview following the completion of his latest film Kuberaa, acclaimed director Sekhar Kammula offered a rare insight into his creative process and filmmaking journey. Known for his soulful and socially conscious storytelling, Kammula spoke candidly about the calm, introspective phase he goes through after finishing a film—patiently waiting for the audience’s verdict.

Kammula is not one to rush between projects. Often taking three to four years between films, he clarified that the gap isn’t due to delay but a conscious decision. He waits for the right story to find him. Once it does, he spends time contemplating whether it’s worth telling—not just from an artistic standpoint, but also in terms of social relevance. His aim, he says, is to bring at least 60–70% of his original vision to life on screen.

Over the years, his approach has evolved. While earlier films like Anand were lighter and feel-good, recent projects like Love Story and Kuberaa have taken on a more intense and layered tone. According to Kammula, this shift reflects the complexity of the themes he now tackles—subjects like caste, class, and social inequality. He believes subtle storytelling often falls short when addressing deep-rooted issues, and a stronger, more direct approach becomes essential.

In Kuberaa, Kammula explores two contrasting worlds—one that is visible and familiar, and another that remains hidden in plain sight, such as the lives of beggars. Through this narrative, he seeks to create awareness without turning preachy. He sees storytelling as a powerful medium through which an ordinary person like him can deliver sincere, idealistic messages that resonate with audiences.

For Sekhar Kammula, cinema is more than just a medium for entertainment or box-office numbers. It is a platform to tell meaningful stories that spark thought and bring about lasting impact.
