Sekhar Kammula’s Kubera Teaser Sparks Mixed Reactions

Throughout his career, Sekhar Kammula has built a reputation for heartfelt, grounded storytelling. However, if there’s one project he truly regrets, it’s the Telugu remake of Kahaani, a film that deviated significantly from his signature style. Now, his upcoming film Kubera — touted as a bold and experimental venture — is once again testing boundaries. But this time, it’s the teaser that’s sparking debate.

Released just yesterday, the teaser for Kubera (unofficially dubbed Trance of Kubera) was expertly crafted — visually striking and immersive, taking viewers deep into the intriguing world of the film. It cleverly avoids revealing the plot, choosing instead to tease the setting and mood. Yet, despite its technical brilliance, the teaser hasn’t created the social media buzz that many expected.

In today’s cinematic landscape, where online hype plays a key role in a film’s momentum, this lukewarm reception has raised eyebrows. While the teaser introduces the backdrop — a story seemingly involving a businessman, a government official, and a beggar in the heart of Mumbai — it keeps the actual narrative tightly under wraps. That ambiguity has left audiences intrigued but not entirely hooked.

There’s a divided opinion. Some feel the teaser was too abstract, making it hard for the audience to connect. Others argue that it’s simply a matter of timing — perhaps fans weren’t prepared for this unexpected, intense new version of Sekhar Kammula.

Regardless of the initial response, it’s far too early to draw conclusions. Kammula is not a filmmaker who takes his audience for granted. Whether he’s building towards a bigger reveal or carefully setting the stage for a thematic surprise, Kubera may yet prove to be one of his most ambitious and impactful projects.
