Shaakuntalam is set in the backdrop of Himalayas: Gunasekhar

Director Gunasekhar is soon going to be back with bang with a mythological film.
He previously announced that he will team up with Rana Daggubati for Hiranyakashyap, but despite the pre-production being done, the film’s shooting has been postponed due to the pandemic. He announced that instead, he will first shot for another mythological tale – Shaakuntalam and that it will be set in the Himalayas.
Talking about it in a recent interview, the director said, “In the Aadiparva of Mahabharata, the story of Shaakuntalam and Dushyantha is very interesting. The film will be an on-screen adaptation of Kalidas’ Abnignana Shaakuntalam. I think it is one of the greatest love stories ever told and the story will be set in the Himalayas. The idea for the film came to be during the lockdown.”
Fans were expecting Gunasekhar to announce shooting of Hiranyakashyap but he surprised them by announcing this film. Announcing the project, he had written, “Amidst this global pandemic, despite ‘Hiranyakashyap’ pre-production work completed, the massive scale shoot will take off later than anticipated and in the meantime, I’ve embarked on another film….Before manifesting the spectacle of Narasimha Avatar on the silver screen in ‘Hiranyakashyapa’..Presenting to you a whimsical ‘Tale of Love’ from the Adi Parva of the Mahabharata..” (sic)


His daughter Neelima Gunasekhar is making her debut as a producer with the film and Mani Sharma will compose the music. Rest of the cast and crew details are yet to be revealed by the filmmaker. Gunasekhar last directed Rudramadevi in which Anushka Shetty played the lead role. Allu Arjun also played the role of the Gona Ganna Reddy in that film which released in the year 2015. From the last five years, Gunasekhar has not directed any film and many reports suggested that he has big plans for Hiranyakashyap.
