Rajinikanth’s Coolie Speech Sparks Online Backlash
August 13, 2025

At the August 2 audio launch of his upcoming film Coolie, superstar Rajinikanth’s speech stirred controversy online after remarks that many interpreted as body-shaming.
While praising his co-stars, the veteran actor described Aamir Khan as “short” and Soubin Shahir as “bald,” sparking criticism from sections of social media. Rajinikanth admitted he was initially unfamiliar with Soubin’s work until director Lokesh Kanagaraj recommended him for the role, citing his performance in Manjummel Boys. The actor said he was “blown away” by Soubin’s acting but added a lighthearted comment about his baldness — a remark some viewers felt was unnecessary.
Speaking about Aamir Khan’s cameo, Rajinikanth called the Bollywood star a “legend” who “stands tall among others despite being short.” While some saw this as a compliment, others viewed it as disrespectful.
Online reactions were swift and divided. Critics argued that if such comments had been made by stars like Chiranjeevi, Mohanlal, or Amitabh Bachchan, the backlash might have been harsher. Some even labeled it “the worst speech of all,” noting the irony of joking about baldness after revealing that Fahadh Faasil — also bald — was the first choice for Soubin’s role.
Directed by Lokesh Kanagaraj and produced by Sun Pictures, Coolie marks Rajinikanth’s 171st film, co-starring Nagarjuna, Shruti Haasan, Upendra, Soubin Shahir, Sathyaraj, and Aamir Khan.
