March 20, 2025

In a recent development concerning the alleged promotion of betting applications by celebrities, the Cyberabad Police have registered a case against several Tollywood actors, including Rana Daggubati, Vijaya Devarakonda, Prakash Raj, Manchu Lakshmi, and Nikhil Aggarwal, among others.

Additionally, legal action has been initiated against six actors and 19 social media influencers in connection with the promotion of betting apps. The case has been filed at the Miyapur Police Station under the jurisdiction of the Cyberabad Commissionerate.

The First Information Report (FIR) has been registered under Sections 318 (4) and 112/rw 49 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), Sections 3 (a), 4 (a), and 4 of the Telangana Gaming Act, and Section 66D of the Information Technology Act, 2008.

The case was initiated based on a complaint by Phanindra Sharma, a resident of Miyapur, who alleged that several celebrities and social media influencers were actively endorsing illegal betting applications through advertisements on websites and social media platforms. The complaint highlighted that these promotions misled individuals into financial losses and distress by encouraging addictive short-term risk-taking behaviors.

Among those named in the FIR are actors Nandamuri Balakrishna, Sri Hanumanthu, Sreemukhi, Vasanthi Sounderajan, Vasanthi Krishnan, Shobha Shetty, Amrutha Chowdhary, Navin Pavan, Neha Pathan, Pandu, Padmavathi, Imran Khan, Vintru Priya, Harsha Sai, Sayyu Sunny Yadav, Shyamala, Tasty Teja, Rithu Chowdhary, and Bandaru Sheshyanthi Supritha.

In addition to this, the Hyderabad and Cyberabad police have recently intensified their actions against social media influencers engaged in promoting betting applications. While the Hyderabad Police previously booked a case against actors for similar activities, this marks the first instance of an FIR being registered against social media influencers.

Further, the Punjagutta Police Station has lodged another case against 11 social media influencers based on a complaint by Vinay Vangala (40), a private employee. The complaint stated that these individuals were actively promoting gambling through mobile applications and websites, violating the Public Gambling Act of 1867.

As part of the ongoing investigation, police have issued notices to the individuals named in the FIR. Some of them have already responded to these notices.

Actor and social media influencer Vishnu Priya appeared before the investigating officers on Thursday. Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of Police (West Zone) S.M. Vijay Kumar emphasized that a significant number of individuals had been lured into betting through these promotions, leading to substantial financial losses. The authorities are now working to curb such activities.

On March 16, the Cyberabad Police also booked YouTuber Harsha Sai for promoting betting applications. Separately, over 25 complainants reported a cumulative loss of more than ₹13 lakh due to deceptive betting app promotions.

In a similar crackdown, YouTubers “Local Boy Nani” from Visakhapatnam and Bayya Sunny Yadav from Hyderabad have also been booked for endorsing betting applications.
