The Tamil film Thalaivan Thalaivi, starring Vijay Sethupathi and Nithya Menen, hit theatres worldwide today and opened to positive reviews. However, the Telugu-dubbed version titled Sir Madam missed its theatrical release in Andhra Pradesh and Telangana, despite its trailer releasing a week ago.
The primary reason for the delay? Intense box office competition. Hari Hara Veera Mallu continues to dominate screens in its opening week. Simultaneously, Mahavatar Narasimha — backed by Hombale Films — secured strong distribution, while multiplex chains are actively promoting the urban drama Saira. Adding to the crowded release window, Hollywood’s Fantastic Four: First Steps also made its entry.
With limited screen availability, the makers of Sir Madam chose to postpone the release to avoid being overshadowed. While the Tamil version has been receiving praise for its humor, emotions, and solid entertainment quotient, the Telugu release now stands on shaky ground.
The challenge? Next week sees the arrival of Vijay Deverakonda’s Kingdom, followed by major releases like Son of Sardar 2, Coolie, and War 2. If Sir Madam doesn’t find a window next week, it may be forced to skip theatres and opt for a direct OTT release — a fate similar to Tourist Family, which debuted straight on Disney+ Hotstar.
Trade experts believe Sir Madam had strong potential to succeed, especially with good word-of-mouth if released today. But with this delay, it may have missed its golden opportunity at the box office.
