In recent days, Bollywood has been buzzing with a heated debate over working hours. The controversy began when director Sandeep Reddy Vanga revealed that Deepika Padukone was dropped from his film Spirit. The situation escalated further when the makers of Kalki Part 2 officially confirmed that Deepika was no longer part of their project.
Though Deepika initially remained silent, she later addressed the issue in an English media interview, saying,
“Many leading men in the industry work only 6 to 8 hours a day and take weekends off. No one questions them. But when we, the actresses, set boundaries for our work hours, we get criticized.”
Her statement triggered mixed reactions — some supported her, while others criticized her attitude. Amid this debate, senior actress and politician Smriti Irani has now shared her perspective, which many see as a subtle counter to Deepika’s remarks.
In a recent interview, Smriti said:
“There’s a lot being said about working hours in the industry lately, and I see people turning it into unnecessary negativity. I don’t want to get caught up in that. If Deepika was replaced in big films, that’s her personal matter, and I don’t wish to comment on it.
But speaking for myself, I’ve always been fully dedicated to my work. I’ve always ensured that producers earn profits from my projects. Even when I was working in TV serials and had just given birth to my two children, I still prioritized my commitments. If I missed a shoot, around 120 people would lose a day’s work — I could never let that happen. I always worked with my producers’ welfare in mind.
Balancing politics, acting, and motherhood has always been my choice, and I’ve given equal justice to all of them. I’ve always believed in working hard so that no producer faces a loss because of me.”
Her words have sparked discussion online, with many netizens pointing out that Smriti’s comments seem like a respectful but pointed response to Deepika’s stance.
For context, Smriti Irani rose to fame over two decades ago with her iconic role as Tulsi in the legendary Hindi TV serial Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi, for which she received numerous awards and accolades. The show’s sequel, Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi 2, recently began production, marking Smriti’s return to the entertainment industry after years in politics.
