The nomination process for the Andhra Pradesh MLC elections concluded at 3:30 PM yesterday, with the ruling NDA alliance comfortably securing its hold, given its overwhelming majority in the assembly. However, what caught everyone’s attention was what is now being referred to as the costliest MLC nomination in AP’s history—the nomination of BJP candidate Somu Veerraju.
For a candidate to file a valid nomination, the party must issue A and B Forms, signed by both the national and state presidents along with the candidate. However, on the day of nomination, the AP BJP office realized around 10:30 AM that the crucial B Form, bearing BJP National President J.P. Nadda’s signature, was still at the party’s head office in Hyderabad.
To resolve this, the documents were flown via a special flight from Hyderabad to Gannavaram. But the process didn’t end there. The documents also required the signature of AP BJP President Daggubati Purandeshwari, who was in Delhi attending the parliamentary session. Upon learning of the urgency, Purandeshwari took another special flight from Delhi to Gannavaram.
Despite these efforts, time was running out, and her commute was getting delayed. To ensure the nomination could be filed on time, the BJP leadership authorized party secretary Kasi Viswanadha Raju to sign the B Form on Purandeshwari’s behalf.
After an intense race against time, Somu Veerraju managed to submit his nomination just 15 minutes before the 3:30 PM deadline. Purandeshwari arrived at the assembly shortly afterward, where she interacted with local BJP leaders and met with Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu alongside Somu Veerraju.
With two special flights and multiple high-level interventions to secure this nomination, political circles are now abuzz, calling it one of the most expensive nominations in AP MLC election history.
