Johannesburg, March 12 (IANS) – South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has extended his heartfelt condolences to the families of the victims who lost their lives in a tragic bus accident in the northeastern province of Gauteng. The accident, which occurred near Johannesburg’s OR Tambo International Airport in Ekurhuleni City, has claimed 16 lives and left 45 others injured.
According to authorities, the incident took place at approximately 6:45 a.m. local time (0445 GMT) on Tuesday, when the bus overturned on a highway. Emergency responders confirmed that 12 individuals had died at the scene, while others succumbed to their injuries later in hospitals.
In a statement issued by the South African Presidency, President Ramaphosa expressed his profound sorrow over the devastating loss of lives.
“While the cause of this tragic accident is still under investigation, we must acknowledge that such incidents leave lasting trauma on the affected families and survivors,” said Ramaphosa. He also emphasized the importance of road safety, urging all drivers to exercise caution and responsibility while operating vehicles.
“We must reflect on the conduct and responsibility of everyone who gets behind the wheel. Human error remains the leading cause of road accidents, and drivers must ensure their vehicles are roadworthy and that traffic regulations are strictly followed,” he added.
South Africa has witnessed multiple fatal road accidents in recent weeks. On March 5, a bus carrying 35 passengers collided with a truck in the Free State province, resulting in the deaths of 10 people. Similarly, on March 9, at least nine passengers lost their lives in a road accident in KwaZulu-Natal province.
Minister of Transport Barbara Creecy reiterated that human error—including speeding, overtaking in prohibited areas, and driving under the influence—remains a significant factor in most road accidents. In response to the increasing number of fatalities, Creecy has directed the Road Traffic Management Corporation to engage with bus operators to discuss enhanced safety measures for passengers.
As investigations into the Gauteng bus crash continue, authorities have urged motorists to prioritize road safety to prevent further tragedies.
