Gyeongju (South Korea), Nov 1 (IANS): South Korean President Lee Jae Myung on Saturday called on the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) member nations to view the rapid transformation brought by artificial intelligence (AI) as a chance to promote inclusive and sustainable growth.
Speaking during the Retreat Session of the APEC summit held in Gyeongju, Lee unveiled South Korea’s new initiative titled “AI-Based Society for All.” He said, “The Republic of Korea envisions a global AI society where everyone can share the benefits of technological progress. We will steadily pursue policies to realize this vision. The transformation led by AI must become an opportunity, not a divide.”
Lee highlighted that South Korea is implementing a comprehensive national AI transformation strategy, focusing on developing large-scale data centers, encouraging innovation-friendly regulations, and nurturing an AI-driven ecosystem that attracts global companies.
He also urged member nations to work together to confront common demographic challenges, such as low birth rates and aging populations, stressing that these issues impact every aspect of society — from economic growth to labor, education, and welfare. “These problems cannot be solved in isolation; they require joint frameworks and collaborative efforts,” he emphasized.
Lee further noted that South Korea is investing in cultural and creative industries as a new engine of growth to adapt to demographic and technological shifts.
At the end of the session, leaders are expected to adopt the “Gyeongju Declaration” summarizing the summit’s outcomes, along with two key documents addressing AI and demographic issues. President Lee will then officially hand over the APEC chairmanship to Chinese President Xi Jinping, whose nation will host the next summit. Following the event, Lee will brief the media on the year’s main achievements in his role as APEC chair.
