Spoiled By Mahanati, Tollywood Fails To Get It Right

Here comes another biopic, which hasn’t impressed people big time as we could see that the life and times of activist George Reddy is not a super hit on the silver screen. And that brings us to the point, why ‘biopics’ are failing again and again on the Telugu silver screen except for the likes of some historical flicks like Gautamiputra Satakarni and Sye Raa.

Whether it is Balakrishna’s version of NTR biopic or Lakshmi Parvathi’s version, or the story of acclaimed weaver Mallesham, or YSR’s hyped Yaatra; audiences didn’t find these biopics compelling enough that they will unfurl a red carpet for them. And this trend of biopics actually started with the success of “Mahanati” on Telugu screen as the unseen story of Savitri turned out to be a huge hit.

Looks like Tollywood got spoiled by the fame and name ‘Mahanati’ acquired, but failed to get the ingredients of that film. For Satakarni and Sye Raa, the visual effects and the unseen history part worked out, along with their grandeur and visuals. But for other films, the lack of proper entertainment in the name of comedy, emotion, sentiment and other basic sensibilities has affected them big time.

Only if a film features all those things, these biopics will work out. To keep it simple, ‘entertainment will carry the message’ but a ‘message will not carry the film’.
