A tragic incident struck Andhra Pradesh early this morning, as nine devotees, including several women and children, lost their lives in a stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga, Srikakulam district. The mishap occurred amid a heavy rush of devotees gathered to offer prayers on the auspicious occasion of Ekadashi.

Eyewitnesses described scenes of panic as hundreds of devotees, most of them women carrying puja baskets, crowded the temple steps. The sudden surge led to chaos, with many falling and getting trampled in the commotion. Distressing visuals from the site showed bodies lying across the temple premises, while others were seen crying and seeking help. Emergency teams and local volunteers rushed to assist, carrying the injured to nearby hospitals for treatment.

Police and rescue personnel quickly reached the spot to bring the situation under control. Authorities are investigating the circumstances that led to the overcrowding and the apparent lack of crowd management.

Governor S. Abdul Nazeer confirmed the death toll and expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy. He directed the district administration to ensure the best possible medical care for the injured.

Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu also expressed his shock and grief, calling the incident “heartbreaking.” In his statement, he said, “The stampede at the Sri Venkateswara Swamy Temple in Kasibugga is deeply distressing. The loss of devotees’ lives in this unfortunate tragedy is extremely painful.”

Authorities have assured that relief measures are underway and that every effort is being made to support the victims’ families and the injured.
