A refreshing wave is sweeping through Indian cinema as star kids move away from predictable acting debuts to explore the creative and technical sides of filmmaking. While newcomers without film backgrounds continue to make their mark with authentic voices, many from legacy film families are returning to the roots of storytelling — learning to write, assist, compose, and direct.
Leading this new-age transformation are Mahadhan Bhupathiraju, son of Mass Maharaja Ravi Teja, and Rishie Manoj, son of ace filmmaker Trivikram Srinivas. Both have joined Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s ambitious project Spirit as assistant directors, gaining first-hand experience in filmmaking from the ground up.
In a similar shift, Akira Nandan, son of Power Star Pawan Kalyan, has chosen a musical path over acting. He’s already making waves as a composer, having created the soundtrack for Writer’s Block, a short film starring Rishie Manoj and directed by Karthik Yarlagadda, son of producer Shobu Yarlagadda.
Producer TG Vishwa Prasad lauded this growing mindset, saying, “It’s great to see star kids begin their journey by working in the direction department — it shows maturity and curiosity about the craft. Understanding both the technical and creative sides helps them evolve into complete professionals, whether as artists or technicians. It’s a healthy sign for the future of our industry.”
The trend extends beyond Tollywood. In Tamil cinema, Jason Sanjay, son of Thalapathy Vijay, is all set to make his directorial debut with an action film starring Sundeep Kishan. Meanwhile, in Bollywood, Aryan Khan, son of Shah Rukh Khan, has already made waves with his digital project The Bads of Bollywood, proving that the next generation is intent on forging its own creative path.
Across industries, the focus is shifting from lineage to learning, as the new generation of insiders embraces the art and discipline of filmmaking — building a fresh creative vocabulary for Indian cinema.
